The driver of the London Underground train involved in the latest terrorist scare was chased by armed police and had a gun held to his head as he tried to escape the scene of today's shooting, according to union officials. The driver started running along an underground tunnel as passengers were fleeing from Stockwell Tube station following the shooting of a suspect.
He was followed by police who briefly held a gun to his head, according to officials from the train drivers' union Aslef.
When other drivers heard about the incident they were reluctant to continue working normally, said Steve Grant, the union's London officer.
He said the incident highlighted the tense atmosphere staff were having to cope with during the present crisis.
Mr Grant said police had since apologised about the incident.
Pretty tense over there!
He could very well have been.
Yea it was like that here in NYC for a long time after 9/11.
Well they didn't shoot this one. I think they knew who they shot.
Its beginning to sound as if the Brits arent all calm and cool with a stiff upper lip, as so many ealier reports have stated
Some day people will learn when the police shout STOP, they really do mean it. One way or another you will stop.
Presumably he did stop. We saw today what happens if you don't stop.
No, it's sounding like they mean business. PC is in the dumpster; now they're doing what needs to be done. When someone says "stop, police" it might be smart to heed that "advice."
By the way, I mean that as no slight to Brits
Why should they apologize? It's a criminal offense to enter the Tube tracks and this joker didn't identify himself as a Tube employee.
The police did the right thing.
Ya know...I have absolutely no problem with that lesson being reinforced as it was today.
This is kind of like people in Iraq who run through stop points and wonder why they get shot.
I was only saying that the widely reported british attitude of calm doesnt seem to be holding true. And who could blame folks for some degree of panic in a situation like that?.
I wonder, under the circumstances if the tube conductor even realized that the police were directing thier shouts to him?
Your statement is full of stereotypes mate. The stiff upper lip thing is as much a stereotype of a Briton to the world as being fat, rich and a loudmouth is a stereotype of an American.
I don't care if you are Captain America you are not calm when someone is about to kill you.
The calmness is a stoicism and determination not to be beaten in normal life, not when a guy is trying to kill 50 people.
Human Beings are Human Beings.
I think he was smart and did stop. Otherwise he would be swiss cheese! The problem is he should be wearing some sort of uniform or ID that would have told the cops who he was.
It doesn't sound like panic to me, sorry. It sounds like checking everyone out. Panic would have produced something totally different, like shooting wildly at anyone and everyone. This seemed quite controlled.
He seemed calm enough. He didn't kill the driver. Had he been panic-filled, the driver and possibly others would be long dead.
Stereotypes aside, that is precicely what Im tryng to say.
I was responding to stereotypes I have seen over an over in our press as of late.
I did not intend to offend.
