Infant Girl Left In Hot Car Dies

A baby was found dead inside a car Thursday after her father went to pick her up at her daycare and workers there told him she had never arrived, authorities said.

Gabriel Saavedra rushed out to his car at Storybook Nursery School and found his tiny daughter, Kayli, still strapped in her infant seat from that morning, police said.

Emergency workers said the girl, who would have been 5 months old on Saturday, was declared dead on the scene.

That just goes to show you, if you want something done right, never give it to a man to do.
I bet your nick name is 'QB'.
What an ignorant thing to say.
LVM - a man.

And just think Mac, of the howls of outrage you would have had aimed at you if you responded with a comparison to Susan Smith and her well developed skills at putting kids into car seats.

Fortunately you have more class than that.

I think the issue is that the car seat is there all the time probably and babies face backward so you don't see them. You might not even see the seat as they put them on the side and the rear view might not pick them up.

Clearly he was distracted, maybe not used to the drop off and just zoned out. His life is hell from now on, very sad thing.

?You would think that with all technological advances of modern day, somebody would have come up with a device to recognize and warn a driver that an infant or child is in the vehicle. Not only that, a loud siren should be part of the warning signal so that anybody in the vicinity would also be warned. That baby must've been in a car seat and a car seat should be capable of being electronically connected to a warning signal that goes off as soon as a driver turns off the car or exits the car.

Good idea. On my car, if I open the door while the key is still in the ignition, I hear a loud beeping sound. This has probably kept me from locking my keys in the car on more than one occasion.

Putting an infant in daycare is abusive. There was a day when parenting was held to be a full-time and demanding job rather than something to be delegated. The need for an alarm as a reminder of a child's presence is a sad commentary.

Airbags have made it unsafe to place infant car seats in the front, and consequently they are placed in the backseat, where they can be easily forgotten.

Easily forgotten? I don't buy it. How could you ever forget that your kid is in the car with you?

My rear view mirror is aimed out the rear window, not down into the back seat.

Not only that, how could he get into his car that afternoon without seeing her in the backseat?

I was thinking the same thing... his story sounds a little 'fishy' to me.

Additionally, they now have small infants facing backwards, and the drivers can't see the child. This may be safer in accidents, but makes them "out of sight and out of mind".

At what point will the number of children dead from left in hot cars exceed the number of children dead from accidents in which they weren't properly restrained?

I shudder to think that I used to drive around with my kids rolling around loose in the back of the station wagon.

Your views about day care are not everyone's views, you know that right?

You are aware that some people on FR have babies in daycare, right? So why voice your inflammatory ideas just now on this thread?

We have alarms for every kind of contingency. Our pool had an alarm that went off if something over a few pounds hit the water, just in case. We have fire and smoke alarms. We have alarms to not leave keys in car. We have alarms to tell us to put on seat belts.

So we must be forgetful, careless, get distracted, etc. So a baby alarm seems reasonable to me. People are human, they make egregious mistakes.

I used to drive car pool with eight or nine kids in the back of my station wagon, no seat belts, etc. They all survived.

I knew of one family that was in the car and about to go when they remembered the baby was still up top of the car.
Another family another car-baby almost, they had driven away when they remembered that the baby was still on the hood of another car they hurriedly went back and there he was up there and crying.

Putting an infant in daycare is abusive.

I agree about the daycare...and it is TOTALLY the father's fault...but I think the daycare should have called and asked where the baby was. It's only common sense and could have helped prevent the tragedy.

Most daycare places do have both numbers; however, parents have a tendency to take day off (particularly Fridays in summer) and don't always notify daycare.

I'm not sure the daycare people have the responsibility of tracking down kids in the custody of their parents.

Well, the fact that you "fear" that you could would probably keep you from doing it.

I'm not saying everyone would forget their children if they couldn't see them. The point I am making is that some parents might, if the car seat was facing backwards and the child couldn't be seen.

Lets say for example that Mom usually drops the baby off, but she has a meeting and Dad has to do it. He drives to work with the radio on and the baby is sleeping. Doesn't make a peep. He is distracted and forgets to go to the sitter. He just follows his usual rout, parks, locks the car and goes into the building, like he does every other day.

This never happened when the car seat was in the front seat. I used to be able to glance at my kids while I was driving when they were little, because car seats were still up front. I can remember singing along with the radio and being amazed that my 3 month old was trying to sing too.

I would keep a running dialog going about what was happening on the road. "Look at that car! he wasn't paying atttention to where he was going!" and other comments. As soon as the kids could talk, we could converse, and I could see them at all times, even out of the corner of my eye while I was paying attention to the road. I could give them a pacifier if they needed one. I could give them a bottle if they needed one, and I could tell when they needed to be changed, (had to pull over to do that!).

I think that a lot of these deaths are caused because the child is in the back seat, often facing away from the parent, and they can't be seen.

geez, people!!! I'm not saying it's the daycare's RESPONSIBILITY...I'm saying a phonemail message might have jogged someone's memory!!
