Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

Another one for the Rottweiler lovers on this forum.

Rottweiler species should be exterminated off the face of the eart.

If it is not a dog, it is a SUV.

My friend's Rotty is a big baby. This dog reacted for a reason. My guess it was beaten with the hose and freaked when he saw it. People make these dogs mean.

The call the child a toddler and an infant. Which is it? They don't mention the age. Just wondering (as I lean over to pet my lab, the big goofball she is).

You could say the same thing about a pet lion raised from a cub.

Another "Oh that Rottweiler was so nice, I don't know what made him snap" story..

Save it. They are vicious animals and don't deserve to be domesticated. There's a reason why we don't domestic Mountain Lions and Grizzly Bears. Rottweilers are in the same category.

My other friend has a Pit Bull. and it is a sweetie. It is not aggressive. In fact, it runs and hides from my chihuahua.

Would a dog snatch a child from the arms of a bigger human?

My first thought was that the child was left unattended. I can't see it just running up to someone to grab a child out of their hands for no reason.

They are land sharks, it's foolish to have a shark in your backyard swimming pool, so why would anyone want to have a land shark in their living spaces?

You cannot protect people from their own stupidity.

Your barking up the wrong tree. Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent and lovable breeds. However, they all need obedience training and should never be owned by those unwilling to commit a lot of time to the dog.

Well, how come people never make Labs or Goldens mean?

It's in the breed, and I wish Pit Bull and Rott owners would just face it.

I don't give much attention to human situations, as in " he was abused as a boy" so that's why he raped and killed 10 women, so we should be merciful with him.....

so why make excuses for a dog?......

an animal is an animal, whether it be a human animal or just a plain old animal.....

Dogs are wolves inbred by men to make them pets.

But wolf instinct still lurks. There is the pecking order from alpha male and alpha female that keeps the rest of the pack in line.

The alpha male and female were not there.

It is NORMAL for a wolf/dog to attack a young rival in the order. Babies and young children are especially at risk.

Don't let your enthusiasm for the species blind you to the undercurrents of what makes them tick.

It is all in the way the animal is treated and raised. You can make a poodle vicious if you treat it improperly. Blame the owners and trainers not the animal.

There's a black lab down the street from me that attacks pretty much everybody that goes by the house. And their pets, too.

Creeps are attracted to some breeds based on mythology.

The mother suffered no major injuries.

WHY in the world not??? If my infant child were being mauled to death by a beast, it would only be after I had been rendered completely incapacitated trying to prevent it. What did she do, stand by and watch??? Good grief!
