Not even the most influential Dylan song, I'd guess. "The Times They Are A Changin'" or maybe "Blowin' in the Wind" (unfortunately) helped give us the Sixties that we had.

I always said that polls are meaningless. This is a prime example. :)

The odd thing was that Dylan DID NOT take part in the antiwar movement.

I'll vote for Ave Maria.
Schubert's? He certainly lived like a rock star--partied hard and died young of VD. :)

How about MacArthur Park? Did you ever see anyone leave a cake out in the rain after that? It made the world a better place. Or at least a less gooey, disgusting place.

Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" was the highest-ranking book, in 19th place.
As Truman Capote said of Kerouac Thats not writing. Thats typing.
On the Road is one of those books that people like to say they read, but few really do.
As a person who has actually read it, I can tell you that nobody could possibly read it and think it was a great book. Back and forth, across the country, waiting for something to happen. Relentless tedium, highlighted only by sections that are somewhat less tedious than the others.

So then this mess we're in now is HIS fault...

"The Times They are a-Changin'" would have been a better pick but "changing the world" is reminiscient of something like saying:
"The 1st time I dropped acid, I saw God, mannnnnnnnnn!!!"

I read it too, and even THE DHARMA BUMS for good measure. But that was it for me and Jack Kerouac!

nobody could possibly read it and think it was a great book. The target is not "great", it's "influential". That book turned more people off reading than any other.

And about the only thing I really remember from ON THE ROAD is one of the characters remarking 'there must be a lot of Italians in Sausalito'!
