That's about the total number of folks on active duty and in the reserve components of the U.S. Armed Forces.
That's just under 1% of the population.
Many are in jail for non-violent drug offenses. Their only crime? Using an intoxicating substance other than alcohol or tobacco.

To do this, you must engage in criminal behavior to obtain drugs,
Consort with known criminals (pushers)
Often engage in criminal behavior to obtain money for drugs
Unless you are independently rich.

Their only crime? Using an intoxicating substance other than alcohol or tobacco. Being a user doesn't get you hard time these days. Being a dealer does. And I don't buy the claim that they're oh-so-innocent. Their money finances organized crime. Ain't nothing "innocent" or "victimless" about that.

While I would never want to see meth or cocaine made legal, I fail to see what putting the casual user in prison does. Get them off the drugs with some program, don't stick them in prison. Dealers are a different story.

Using an intoxicating substance other than alcohol or tobacco (which isn't "intoxicating") while knowing full well that it was against the law and could result in prison time.
