A fire rescue official attends to the body of a unidentified man killed in a car accident when he lost control of his vehicle as hurricane Katrina struck on the I-10 highway outside of Pensacola, Florida, August 29, 2005.

Palm trees are bent from the force of Hurricane Katrina in the Grande Lagoon area of Pensacola, Fla.

A vehicle makes its way through a flooded street from the overflowing Grande Lagoon.

A view of a parking lot that fell into the ocean at the beach after hurricane Katrina struck in Destin, Florida.

The dolphins and their keepers moved from the NO Zoo and Aquarium to the hotel pool, so they wouldn't get hurt.

Bet the liked the change of scenery.

Found this interesting... from Rich Galen's Mullings column this morning:

In the September issue of Discover Magazine (regular Mullsters know I like to read Discover because it provides me science in single syllables), there is a "Discover Dialogue" with a meteorologist named Dr. William Gray whom the mag's editors say "may be the worlds most famous hurricane expert."

Discover is big on global warming and generally falls into the column supporting the notion that if George W. Bush would only support the Kyoto thing we would be worrying about an impending ice age starting about Columbus Day.

The issue of whether man-made global warming is causing this spate of hurricanes is part of the interview:

At the end of the interview Gray is asked if his position on man-made global-warming has influenced funding for his work:

Let's review the bidding: The most respected hurricane expert over the last half-century holds a view on global-warming which is contrary to conventional wisdom and so his research money was cut off by Al Gore.

SirKit sent me a link to this video footage of the aftermath. I believe this is the downtown shopping district of Gulfport which is near where Hwy 49 intersects with Hwy 90. The big church is the First Baptist Church which, if I remember correctly, faces the beach and Hwy 90, just east of that 49/90 intersection. Check out Katrina Damage video

None of the Mississippi posters from the coast northward are online.

Howlin linked some pics earlier from Jackson Mississippi showing extensive damage at Mississippi College just west of Jackson.

The winds have done tree and structural damage. I have a lot of kin near the college.

I imagine the prolific freeper Onyx is out.

Steve Schwartz on the Weather Channel said earlier that the death toll in Mississppi was estimated at over 50 so far.

It's staring to pick up here in Nashville too. Calling for 40 mph winds even here and 70mph gusts...I lose my power in these hills even when someone farts too loud down hollow.

I believe the winds in Jackson were 100+

Hope nobody was in that Land Rover on the left.

Otherwise God did that owner a favor.

Amphib 2001 Brittany

Ducks come from DUKW, a military acronym that designated the vehicle as amphibious military personnel carriers. D Stands for the year it was designated, 1942; U for its amphibious nature; K for its all-wheel drive; and W for its dual rear axles.

I believe it is Biloxi or Gulf Port. At least there is a shopping center of a name like that on the Mississippi Gulf coast across the street from the Gulf.
