BALTIMORE (August 31, 2005) — Emergency managers up the east coast and elsewhere are reporting serious gas shortages.
"We may be facing a major fuel supply situation," reported a county-level emergency manager in South Carolina. "We in this county are cutting all non-essential services such as garbage pickup. It is a developing situation."
Gas stations in upstate South Carolina reported they were running out of gas. "The state is telling us the pipeline that services the northeast has been disrupted at the supply point in Louisiana, and that it will take a week and half for it to reach us," he said. "A lot of gas stations are out and closed in this area."
In North Carolina, a gas station on U.S. 74 reported it had only premium gas left and was selling it for $2.99. Station managers say they are unable to get gas from their suppliers. A nearby competitor station reported it had to close altogether because it was out of all fuel.
In Michigan, gas prices were as high as $3.92 for unleaded regular in Garden City, just one of many stations with high prices in the Detroit metro area. Forty percent of Michigan’s gas comes from the Gulf Coast.
Hurricane Katrina shut down a number of oil platforms, refineries and pipelines.
I didn't expect the ripples from Katrina this far this fast. If this keeps up for any length of time we're going to see major problems here.
Gas prices in Indianapolis are now at $3.29.
There is underground rumors that by end of day tommorrow most stations will be out.

It's gonna be a rough Labor Day. Or maybe a three-day weekend will provide a break for folks (just causing them to stay close to home) until things can start to get under control.
I just heard from a co-worker that there are long lines at Charlotte, NC gas stations and his wife could only get 10 gallons.
Sounds like things are heating up.
I wonder when we'll build more refineries.
Get a locking gas cap on your vehicle. Thieves are stealing gas out of tanks.

Something's very wrong that this is causing such a disaster. Hurricanes happen, we should have better backup plans for natural disasters. More refineries and more storage facilities better be in the works.
I think that county needs to rethink. Garbage pickup is not a non-essential service, garbage breeds pests and disease, and anyway aren't garbage trucks deisel.
Premium gas for $2.99? Nice. I took advantage to fill up Monday am here in Wichita for $2.59, yesterday that had gone up to $2.79, and $2.99 right now. I see it going alot higher.
Why would this cause shortages? Aren't gas reserves several weeks behind oil refining?

Folks, if we have no trucks, and people panic over food supply, all bets are off for a civil end to this mess. With our "Just in time" inventory system of food, we may have about one to 2 weeks of supply -- that is a run on grocery stores do not occur.
Are there verified reports of this?
Our local paper here in Asheville is reporting lines and shortages and some stations have run out. Reminds me of the early 70s gas shortages. Now's the time to buy stock in those oil companies!
I guess those nasty oil companies should not try to build any oil refineries elsewhere. Just along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Texas.
It is a shame that California has had a moratorium on oil drilling for about 40 years offshore where is plenty of oil, and it naturally seeps on the beach.
And let us not forget that we can't drill in ANWR in Alaska for fear of hurting any mosquitos...
Now Kennedy, Kerry, kooks of the left, will rant and rave about oil companies not doing anything now that the EnviroWackos have hamstrung US production and US refinery capacity.
We need to import more gasoline from refineries in Libya, Iran, Nigeria, and Angola...
Diesel was only eight cents cheaper here in St. Louis.
