Was this tidbit inserted for comic relief?
I don't know who is in charge. Guiliani was all over the place. You don't see the mayor or the Governor.
This could happen in any metropolitan area in our country, and might be worse. It ain't a Southern thang.
Exaclty! It's frustrating and I have no idea. I assume he HAS NOT asked or they would be there. This man is imcompetent and should be relieved of duty immediately and replaced by someone who knows what the hell they are doing. He's clearly in WAY over his head.
Where the heck am I supposed to keep all that stuff? It won't even fit in my car when/if we have to run.
Thank you, though! I'm going to print it off.
If that guy survives, he's got a bestseller on his hands.
A crass observation, I know, but that's an amazing, compelling narrative he's compiling. Wow.
after all the comments on this thread, you choose me to call "bigoted"? LOL! That is actually funny.
I bet they're feeling pretty stupid about moving out of Charlotte for a "better deal" in the Big Puddle right about now.

These storms usually start off the coast of Africa. That's when you start watching them. There's no reason whatsoever there wasn't enough food or water. No excuses will do. The La Governor may not win re-election. SHE DIDN'T KNOW THAT YOU WATCH THE EYE????? If the storm slows down and the eye stays tight, Governor of La, you better get ready.
and, yes, Mogadishu, too.
...
Dead bodies everywhere: convention center, down camp street, all over.
...
It's raining now and I guess that's a relief from the heat. It's hot as hell down there in the sun. Crime is absolutely rampant: rapes, murders, rape-murder combinations.
...
In case anyone in national security is reading this, get the word to President Bush that we need the military in here NOW. The Active Duty Armed Forces. Mr. President, we are losing this city. I don't care what you're hearing on the news. The city is being lost. It is the law of the jungle down here. The command and control structure here is barely functioning. I'm not sure it's anyone's fault -- I'm not sure it could be any other way at this point. We need the kind of logistical support and infrastructure only the Active Duty military can provide. The hospitals are in dire straights. The police barely have any capabilities at this point. The National Guard is doing their best, but the situation is not being contained. I'm here to help in anyway I can, but my capabilities are limited and dropping. Please get the military here to maintain order before this city is lost.
Some things that are important and should be added to that list:
1. Compact, lightweight handheld CB radio capable of operation on Channel 9 and Channel 19 (and batteries).
2. Compact, lightweight handheld FRS/GMRS radio plus batteries.
3. Crank/solar combo powered AM/FM radio (shortwave optional).
It's clear to me that communications are almost as important as food.
"My gang-banger looters"? What does that mean? Is that a racial remark? I'm white, if you need to know. Your rescuers? Wow, you are really full of yourself!
The woman reporting from the EOC in Baton Rouge seemed to say that there were lots of NG and others ready to go in but the area wasn't safe. Same with FEMA they say they can't go in because it's not safe.
Well, excuse me, but how is it going to get safe unless the NG goes in.
We may be seeing a political play by the local LA government to get the military in first because thugs are going to need to be taken out and the LA government doesn't want to be "blamed" for that.
And, in NO, a few additional factors that are worsening that situation, including extremely limited access, a lack of communications, and a large urban population.
I would bet money that there is a plan, perhaps even a very thorough plan, that you could sit down and pick through, that is rendered null and void by circumstances on the ground. That happens with plans. And plans don't get things done all by themselves. FEMA had a great plan to pre-position resources, and executed it. But now getting those resources to where they are needed is near impossible - not because of the lack of a plan, but simply because of conditions on the ground.
Yes, it is bad. It is very, very bad. But it is easy for any of us to sit at a computer with electricity and food and telephones and a shower this morning and a car and family members and friends who are safe and sound and pontificate about how we'd do it better. Easy, yes, but a waste of time and breath.
These folks are going to be extremely dangerous as they are detoxing. Food and water isn't going to cut it for them. They NEEEED drugs. In a city the size of New Orleans, plus the surrounding areas, think folks on how many hard core drug users are jonesing really badly right now, and what kind of a problem this creates.
Please fv...evac boats and choppers were subject to gunfire this morning. Hysterics on this thread are not going to get people out of NOLA.
If Clinton were president, we would be turning our outrage outward and FREEPING THE WHITE HOUSE like crazy, letting the folks at the top know our viewpoints. However, I don't know if anyone has called for a general CYBER FREEP of the White House or Homeland Security, asking them to do the things necessary that each of us is telling each other internally, that they should do. I think I have to spend some time freeping the powers that be, now.
