Communications..True..oh so true. And with the advent of computer chips, advanced electronics...there are electronic hand generated/solar items that encompass/contain all-in-one, most of the features you listed.
You have to be able to find out what's going on, what's gone wrong, where to avoid, and where your allies and enemies are, and you can't do that without radios.
