How much has gas jumped in your area since Katrina and is it price gouging or supply and demand?

Also, what effect will Katrina have on the economy? Will high gas prces bring a recession or more oil exploration and new refineries?

Here in middle Tennessee gas has gone up 45 cents a gallon to about $2.90. I say that it is plain old price gouging because the oil that went to $70 a barrel Monday, hasn't even been pumped out of the ground and it will be weeks before that price is truly reflected at the pumps.

I'd use the word "looting" instead of 'gouging'.

I filled the tank in Norfolk Va at 2.59 Tuesday morning. The same station is 2.89 today. IMO, it's gouging, as it was before Katrina hit.

It went to 3.39 here in Charlotte last night and many stations ran out of gas. Luckily, I only live a couple of miles from work and I took the bus this morning to conserve fuel. I'm not going complain too much about the short term rise in gas prices. After all, I have food, water and electricty; something the folks in NOLA have been without for days.

Average 2.57/gallon on Sunday.
Average 2.80/gallon today.
I say the weasels are showing considerable restraint so far.

They can charge whatever they want considering all the people panicking are willing to pay for it. The supply and demand is for gasoline and not oil.

Up over Fifty cents yesterday in Columbus.
$3.09 everywhere on my side of town.
I'm seriously considering canceling my trip this weekend.
$60.00 to fill up? I'll pass.

In Georgia we have lines wrapped around the block. Some stations were pricing gas at $6.00 yesterday.
Our Governor, Sonny Purdue has vowed to crack down on the gougers. Gas is hovering around $4.00

Oh and you'll never find a proper market price in a panicked situation like this.

Instead of a hit and run, please explain your beliefs. Why is it okay to run up the price of gas by 50 cents or more a gallon when the store owners will not see the true price jump for weeks?
