Take them into your home? I'd want to screen them for criminal records. I've seen a lot of thugs among them. Take a look who's asking for help, many are young able bodied males who should have been out aiding their fellow human beings. I say aid the children, the aged and ill people. The welfare rolls of TX. will be much higher for the forseeable future.

"Take them into your home?"

That, unfortunately, could be a fatal mistake.

No way in hell!

Bill Clinton has several homes, in addition to the vacant 5,000 sq ft. Penthouse at his LR Library.

Little Rock is taking in 20,000 displaced persons. Come on, Slick..step up to the plate....LOL.

I frequently listen to Dennis and like him very much. My brother met him in person and was impressed with his graciousness and sincerity. He is a very decent person.

You are right on target my friend. The tent cities would work just fine. Keep them in the states where they lived and draw from them to work when the clean up begins.

Are you an expert at the logistics of moving large numbers of old, sick and hungry people? They are having enough trouble getting them away from New Orleans, just how far do you want us to take them?

A couple of hundred thousand people, military and civilians are busting rear to save, feed and clothe these people in nine states. When you work out how to get them all to the mid west call FEMA and let them in on it.

I know I sound testy and I am. This is a major screw up and lots of good folks are trying to fix a problem far bigger than it needed to be.

Background checks can be done. They were doing some security checks before they took people to the Astrodome.

O'Reilly helped to effect a rescue for a woman in her seventies living with her 98 year old mother. Neither of them are a threat to anyone. I'm sure there are many more like them.

Good point.

That being the case, folks like these are the only ones I might even consider taking into my home.

I'm leery of hastily-made background checks, however, and don't have much faith in them at all.

I've donated to the Salvation Army, but I am unwilling to become a possible victim myself by taking even one stranger into my home.

Unfortunately I can see two ways this plan could go awry. One has already been discussed, and the other is psychos/perverts taking women and children into their homes.

In most cases the arrangements will probably be fine, but the potential for abuse in two directions looms large.

The sentiment behind the idea is admirable but practicality is another matter.

Indeed, it's going to turn out to be the matter.

Dennis was talking about Katrina victims in general, not just those from N.O.

There are a lot of people who have a spare bedroom. I'm sure the shelters will screen people and make sure that anyone they refer to individual housing are good folks. I saw quite a few of them interviewed last night.

They will not be referring out the thugs and the ingrates.

I would want to know if they had a criminal record before I let anyone in my home. Being a victim of a hurricane doesn't make everyone a good person. Have a kind heart but don't be foolish.

I got a call from my daughter in Jena Germany this morning. She had received an email from the Baptist Mission Board describing what had happened to the Baptist Seminary in New Orleans. All there is lost, but the students have been rescued, and the entire world of their graduates and supporters are joining arms to recover.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, the national media does not report the positive. The MSM does not, will not, report the faith based charities that began work even before the hurricane hit, and have never stopped.

This is no different than picking up a hitchiker! Would you do that?

Of course not. Notice, even those here who claim to be in favor of doing this are not actually doing it themselves.
