Governor's fleet now includes gas-friendly hybrid SUV
TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Governor Jeb Bush, who's urged Floridians to conserve gasoline and participate in other energy-saving measures following Hurricane Katrina, seems to be doing his part in that effort.
Bush was being driven on Friday in a Ford Escape Hybrid, a considerably smaller SUV than the Ford Expedition he'd previously been shuttled around in. The hybrid was secured from the state's Department of Environmental Protection fleet, and combines electric and gas power.
The hybrid vehicle can get about 36 miles per gallon in highway usage, or about double what the larger SUV necessitated.
"This baby ... makes more sense," the governor said.

The hybrid buzz is moronic. It's so trendy to buy a hybrid car nowadays that the manufacturers are able to charge thousands of dollars over the sticker price -- and to get a hybrid with any decent amount of power, you're already paying thousands above the price for the regular model.
It ain't gonna be worth it to buy a hybrid for quite some time. It certainly won't save anyone any money right now unless you're willing to drive a ~100hp compact.

The Escape hybrid starts at $27k, goes up to $29k.
And dealerships usually won't part with them for less than sticker. They're exempt from the current employee pricing program.

I hate to say it but there are other cars I'd rather spend 27K on than this.

How much does it cost?I believe that one of the articles that I read on this actually listed how much Florida had paid for this particular vehicle, but I don't seem able to find it again.

The current fashionable demand for them will enable economy of scale and competition that will reduce the premium. But, this may take a few years, as you say.
The plug-in hybrid is another issue entirely. Depending on one's driving habits, one could easily get 300 mpg.
