A few months ago, these same guys were fighting in Iraq. Now they were roaring down the highway in a long green line in central South Carolina, in the lane next to me. As I mentioned, they looked tough. But most also looked as if they were barely old enough to shave. Some of them probably had tubes of Clearasil (or whatever teenagers use today to fight acne) stowed away in their field packs.

Meanwhile, the poor cops in N.O. are being given trips to Vegas so they can recuperate. Think our military will get the same privilege after a week or two of grisly work?

They will need it after a week of corpse recovery. Bloated corpses that are leaking maggots is not a pretty sight.

I understand that the men will be going to a FEMA class in Central Florida for a few days to learn just how to handle these dead Americans. If combat in Iraq didn't build a shell around them, this certainly will.

I know. A city full of floaters. No dental records. I can only imagine the odor (and I worked a burn unit for a year so I know to a degree how bad it must be). My husband has taken some forensic classes through the Army - I can't help but wonder if they won't pull him down there at some point because of the overwhelming nature of the task. It will require so many people.
