5 Percent of D.C. Homes Have Loaded or Unlocked Guns Updated: Tuesday, Sep. 6, 2005 - 11:48 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) - The District may have a high number of gun-related crimes, but according to a new report it has the lowest number of homes with loaded and unlocked guns. A study published in the journal Pediatrics finds that only 5 percent of D.C. homes keep such guns around. Wyoming had the highest number. Thirty-three percent of that state's adults said they kept firearms in or around their homes unlocked and loaded.

D.C.'s low numbers are attributed to its long-standing bans on handguns and semiautomatic weapons.

The report finds overall 1.7 million U.S. children live in homes that have loaded and unlocked guns.

All guns are loaded until you personally verify that they are not.

I believe this survey was generated by asking children about their parents. Is this really a way to get truthful answers? My kids, when very young had no idea that a gun was in the house. (And while kids were coming and going the gun was in a locked safe. (So much for home defense, but it was there if I had time to get it. The compromise worked for me. Now that the kid ia away at school, the guns are easier to get, and come out of hiding when unrest is nearby.

I see 5 about 10 feet to my left, and know there's another one about 3 feet behind me.

Yeah..sure.

If I was asked...I wouldn't tell anyone I had guns either. And I'm not a criminal.

Although I am rich....so in the eye's of the Dems...I am a criminal.

Yikes!!! LOL!!

Just damn, nothing like an unloaded and locked up gun for self defense against home invasion.

Don't forget the combo for your mandatory trigger guard.

Don't forget about Vermont, where you don't even need a permit to carry a high-capacity Saturday night special assault .50 caliber cop-killing armor-piercing semiautomatic Derringer revolver handgun around in public parks. Concealed, no less!!

Last I heard, you were allowed to keep rifles in D.C., but not handguns.

Our children (ages 17, 12, 10 and 8) know exactly where the guns are, that they are loaded, how to correctly use them and what would happen if they ever so much as thought about handeling them irresponsibly.
Additionally, they are comfortable on a shooting range, enjoy shooting, received their first rifle on their 8th birthdays and when get home from practicing, the boys' job is to field strip, clean and reassemble all of the guns as necessary.

The only one who still needs help with cleaning her .30-.30 is my daughter; hopefully by the time she is nine, she'll have gotten better at it.

Correct. That is, until some white kids snuck over his fence one night to take a dip in his pool.

You can have a shotgun in DC, if you pay the fee, but no handguns and no rifles are allowed. Trouble is, I can't remember the last time someone in DC was killed by a shotgun blast.

BANG!

S&W on my hip, Mossy next to the night stand, Walther in the bathroom vanity, AK47 next to the porch door. All loaded. All unlocked.

God Bless America!

This ought to read: "The District has a high number of gun-related crimes because it has the lowest number of homes with loaded and available self-defense weapons."

I'm sure this is an accurate survey in a gun-banned community. Hello, is this the owner of the house? We're just doing a survey to see if you have a gun( or guns) in your home. If so, are they loaded and locked or just loaded? How many, if any, children live in this home. etc.

YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME

Or the key on the key-ring in your car in the garage.

LOL. Unfortunately, some people believe that, that configuration exists.

So I'd be interested in finding out if there is a correlation between loaded guns in the home and the crime rate in the various states.

I'm sure there is but don't have the figures to prove it.
