According to the Bureau of the Census, New Orleans' population was thought to have fallen from 484,674 in 2000 to 469,032 in 2003. At that rate it would have dropped another 10,000 by the time of the hurricane.
The point is: the media is not paying much attention to those who left the city in the first wave by whatever means.
