WHAT BECAME OF THE NINETY AND NINE?

In the 2000 census, the population of New Orleans in the metropolitan area was 1,337,726. In the city proper, the population was 484,674.

80% of the people of New Orleans obeyed the evacuation order.

The 77,000 people who went to shelters were 5.75% of the metropolitan area population and 15.89% of the population of the city proper.

66% of the people in New Orleans were black. So, about 319,885 people in New Orleans were black and 164,789 were white.

If the entire 77,000 people who stayed behind were black (they were not), there were still 242,885 black residents who evacuated with the 164,789 white residents. (More black residents than white residents.)

If the entire 20% (96,935) who did not evacuate were black (they were not), there were still 222,950 black residents who evacuated with the 164,789 white residents. (More black residents than white residents.)

Most of the black residents evacuated.

The media is not talking about the people who evacuated.

They would rather play “the race card."

Excellent observation! So according to the MSM, those who stayed (or couldn't leave) are upward compatible with the entire N.O. black population, but those who left are not downward compatible with that same entire population. Thus, the MSM is implying that bad behavior by blacks is indicative of the entire race, while good behavior is not.

What happened to the 4.11% (appx 20,000) not accounted for?

One possible problem with this analysis is that the people who went to the shelters count as evacuated. They evacuated as the government wanted. They just did not get out of the city.

Good question.

Probably some are dead, some are hiding with their pets, and some are among those who left. That 80% who evacuated is most likely an estimate.

They are the ones that have been dead for 20 years but haven't stopped voting Dem.

The point is: the media is not paying much attention to those who left the city by whatever means.

Michael Novak reached the same conclusion on NRO.

Slightly different angling, though.

The real point is that people who do not bother to evacuate when a maniditory evacuation is ordered do so at their own risk. Around here sometimes on the barrier island the police make you sign a form if you won't leave.

Sure you feel sorry for the people who did not evacuate but that was at their own risk. But the outrage about the people at the SuperDome, Convention Center and other shelters is that they did evacuate. And the Mayor nor the Governor made sure the their was water so those evacuating would not suffer dehydration. Some may have behaved badly in those shelters, but they did what was asked of them. And although they were warned they would not be, those who evacuated to the shelters should have been provided for minimally.

That is why the blame shifting is going on. The state and local authorities know the Federal government does not set up shelters, but the pictures are awful, they are trying to fool the uninformed into thinking the Federal government that was responsible for those shelters.

According to the Bureau of the Census, New Orleans' population was thought to have fallen from 484,674 in 2000 to 469,032 in 2003. At that rate it would have dropped another 10,000 by the time of the hurricane.

The point is: the media is not paying much attention to those who left the city in the first wave by whatever means.
