Anderson Cooper stupifies Eddie Compass
CNN | 9-09-2005

Did anyone just see the exchange between Anderson Cooper and Eddie Compass? He tried to pin the chief down on the evacuation issue and the chief about blew a circuit breaker.

I had to look twice, but Police Supt Eddie Compass had his badge on UPSIDE DOWN tonight, too. Is a message being sent? I saw another report showing the symbol on a NOPD t-shirt and the star definitely goes with the single point up.

Do you suppose anyone decided to tell him, "Hey, Chief, you might want to take a look at your badge?"

This is not true--I was at Paul Accardo's service this week and his wife was there...

I heard it was the other officer who killed himself. Although I do hope it is not true at all.

Why do they call New Orleans "The Crescent City"? Thanks!

It seems no one answered this one. The Mississippi River curls around about 3 sides of the city in the shape of a crescent. Lake Pontchartrain is on the other (north) side.

They waited so long to evacuate, they had little chance to get the school districts to call for the buses.

Nobody's really asking the question, but the question that needs to be asked is, "Why did you wait so long to order an evacuation?"

By the time they ordered the evac, it was too late, and I think they knew it.

I think the heat will be on Blanco & Nagin. That's going to be hard to avoid.

All they would have had to do is to show those two clowns on TV and say "if you stay, these are the people who will be in charge and on whom your life will depend." The exodus would have been epic.

I think thousands recognized Nagin & Compass as being in the same boat and beat feet..throwin the gutless Gov and it was a record evacuation...

I asked an ex- cop friend who used to live there(Louisiana) the same question. He said the authorities (Governor and Mayor) were hoping it would be another false alarm,(they get a lot of them) or the Hurricane would turn course etc. They, of course were not counting on the levee breaking. Never the less it's their job to secure the buses, bus drivers, pay over time pay, make sure the buses are gassed up, secure reliable shelters on higher ground. All of the above , they had plenty of time to do! 2 or 3 days before, they knew this storm was headed their way. But sadly gas, and over time for bus drivers, cost money that they would have to take out of their precious budget. Something ,I have a feeling ,they don't like to do!

I've wondered if the school bus drivers left town anyway before anyone had a chance to call them

Bus drivers are irrelevant. Anyone who can drive a stick, can drive a school bus, and ALL city transit busses are automatic.

Any politician who would let the lack of correct paperwork on the part of the drivers hold up an evacuation should be lynched.

I live in Portland, Oregon. We were "supposed" to get 1000 evacuees last weekend. We set up a temporary shelter for them. It kept getting postponed. Yesterday, it was down to 500 people, supposed to arrive today. Today, it has been cancelled. FEMA says the need isn't there.

Setting up the temporary shelter and now taking it down, and all the preparations, supposedly cost $100,000. And of course we're going to ask for reimbursement from FEMA.

Nice waste of valuable money, eh???????? How many times/places has this scenario played out in the last week across the country?

Where is the Command and Control? Where are the Grown-ups? Who is in charge of this fiasco, even after all this time?

It's not that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing... the left hand doesn't even know the right hand exists.

Found this quote on a local forum:

Quote of the Day "If Sen. Mary Landrieu were as good at busing black people to safety as she was at busing them to the polls to vote, none of them would have died."

Well, that was not necessarily a bad contingency for FEMA to use seeing as the NO locals probably couldn't tell them how many refugees to expect. The real kicker will come when they tear it all down and then the next wave of people come out of NO and need a place to go. FEMA will pay AGAIN to reopen the shelter.

You also need to consider that once the refugees from the two cesspits got 3 squares and a shower, some were able to contact relatives and make arrangements to get as far away from a government sponsored anything as possible.

For mass evacuations you have to estimate large. I suspect some of the municipalities jumped the gun and took a stand-by request as a green light to proceed. To give Blank-o one tiny shred of support, I think there was someone with school buses turned back at the city limits and they whined, "we were told to come up with an inventory of what we had and a list of drivers." Somehow that morphed into an execute order and they showed up with an unairconditioned bus w/o rest room for a long-haul trip.

Finally, don't forget that past disasters gave the lesson that money will rain down from the heavens and that everything is reimbursable. I can't attribute the source but someone told me that when FPL was asked why they didn't do a better job of keeping the trees trimmed along the power line routes they said "why when FEMA will pay us to do it after a storm?" So no wonder your guys were so quick to spend 100K.

"he is a gay man and a gay journalist"

If he has AIDS he should steer clear of New Orleans. The flooding has exposed everything to dangerous disease. Already he has allowed his mind to be exposed to the pollution of the left; who are a dirty, filthy, lying, terrorist-sympathizing, communist, Nazi, racist, fascist, God hating, antisemitic, friend of Castro, bottom feeding, enemy of freedom, mutant rat, Kool Aid drinking, and virus that brings sickness to all people who want freedom. In short, this gay guy is toast!

"sadly gas, and over time for bus drivers, cost money that they would have to take out of their precious budget. Something, I have a feeling, they don't like to do!'

Methinks they had designs on some of that budget in the confusion of the hurricane turmoil. It would be like these DemonRATS to divert some of that money into their favorite recreation fund. They are willing to expend some poor people and little babies to keep the good times rolling. Those DemonRATS have big pockets and pockets they mean to fill!

Anderson Cooper is Gloria Vanderbilt's son. and he is a gay man and a gay journalist.

As New Jersey's own Jim McGreevy would say, "I am a gay AMERICAN!"
