In Nursing Home, a Fight Lost to Rising Waters (Broussard less than truthful on Meet The Press)

St. Bernard Parish officials say that 32 of the home's roughly 60 residents died on Aug. 29, more than a week ago.

Update 9-11-11
**********

From Lies.com

"..And finally, on the question I raised a few days ago about Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard’s tearful story about his emergency manager’s mother drowning in a St. Bernard nursing home, I think the evidence shows pretty clearly that Broussard was embellishing the story. Readers helpfully pointed me to the following news accounts:

New York Times: In nursing home, a fight lost to rising waters.

Newsday: Desperately seeking survivors.

MSNBC: This anger comes from watching death.

From the MSNBC item:

The man he was talking about is Thomas Rodrigue, who told “Dateline” that his 92-year-old mother was one of 32 elderly people found dead at the St. Rita’s nursing home.

***********
MSNBC Quote:
"..The man he was talking about is Thomas Rodrigue, who told “Dateline” that his 92-year-old mother was one of 32 elderly people found dead at the St. Rita’s nursing home..."
***********

But the 32 people who died at St. Rita’s nursing home didn’t die on Friday; they died earlier in the week, when the floodwaters first inundated the low-lying facility. Rather than being attributable to the federal authorities’ slow response (which was pretty much the point of Broussard’s version of the story), the death of those senior citizens was more the fault of local authorities (who failed to evacuate them) than of federal officials (who wouldn’t have been there in time to rescue them under the best of circumstances).

So, assuming the MSNBC story is accurate, Broussard’s story was at least significantly embellished. The tear-jerking account of the repeated calls to momma were fictional (or at least were displaced from their actual time of occurrence, which would have to have been before or during the storm, not during the several days afterward when FEMA was MIA). And if that part was fiction, it would mean that Broussard, for all the apparent sincerity in his emotional on-air breakdown, was willing to lie in order to make his story work better as political theater, which in turn makes it harder for me to credit the rest of the slow-FEMA-response anecdotes he described .."

"wonder how many shootings, rapes, robberies and gang violence happen on an average day(before Katrina) in the Big Easy?"

New Orleans was on track to be, yet again, the murder capital of the US this year, pointing toward 300 murders in 2005, or, just under 1 per day. In NO alone.

Too similar to the hated "Bush lied, people died," but my version is enough of an "in your face" to the RATS because of the similarity. Maybe a matter of taste.

Present your side and let the other side scream. .........

That would be so nice but just one little problem. They don't want us to get a word in edgewise. If we wait for them to be done and politely give our story, first they will never be done and second they will constantly and loudly interrupt as often as they can. The moderator often doesn't want to appear to "pick on them" too much and won't stop them from interrupting hardly at all. Their tactic is to spew out as many lies as they can as fast as they can and as often as they can. Their tactic is to keep us from talking. If you want to play nice with them the truth will hardly if at all get out. It will be surrounded with 100 lies. Some have learned to "take the gloves off" when playing with these liberal big mouth people. One must "take their gloves off" when dealing with those who have their tactics down to propagate lies and suppress truth. It's like asking our soldiers to be polite and go by all the pc rules when they are fighting terrorist. It doesn't work. They will run over the top of us.

This story reminds me of something we all should have learned from the Clinton years...

Get your version of the story out there, make your opponent look like the Grim Reaper and by the time the actual *FACTS* are accounted for, your version is cemented as the "truth" of what happened.

More from Lies.com (Great work BTW)

More Detail on Tom Rodrigue’s Mother - September 10th, 2005

"..Valued lies.com reader trg34211 supplied a link to the following transcript from CNN’s Newsnight program. It features an interview with Tom Rodrigue, whose mother’s death by drowning after days of frantic phonecalls was tearfully described by Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard on Meet the Press last week: Newsnight with Aaron Brown.

It seems increasingly likely that Rodrigue’s mother died in the initial flooding on Monday, August 29, and that Broussard’s story about frantic phonecalls on the subsequent Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday was a lie..."

"Anyway, here’s the transcript:

CANDIOTTI: Tom Rodrigue, himself a former emergency management director for Louisiana’s National Guard, was out of town when Katrina turned toward New Orleans. He started calling the nursing home Saturday, urging that it be evacuated.

RODRIGUE: You know, they indicated they were not going to leave.

CANDIOTTI: Sunday night, as Katrina struck, Rodrigue was 30 miles away directing emergency personnel for Jefferson Parish. He called the nursing home in St. Bernard Parish again, pleading with officials to get the residents out. He was told they were going to try.

RODRIGUE: I called the St. Bernard officials again and, you know, told them that, you know, they’ve got to get, you know, these people out. And they said they notified them, and that they weren’t — they refused to leave. And I said, “Well, you need to send the sheriff’s office down there and make them leave.” And he said, “I’m doing everything I can.”

CANDIOTTI: On Wednesday, 10 days after Katrina struck, authorities began removing bodies from St. Rita’s Nursing Home. Eva Rodrigue’s remains have not yet been found....."

I believe that Mr. Broussard and other local officials need to explain to the American public why they did not evacuate these people and why he altered the story and shifted blame to the Federal Government.

They have to maintain the fiction that local officials are blameless, and all the death and destruction is the fault of the evil Republican Administration.

You're right to a point. Those that scream and whine the loudest tend to get heard the most nowadays on both sides of the coin. Sometimes, in my state, if you disagree with even one little thing or cross the lines of some conservative politicians (I am conservative, but don't always agree with every little thing with some in my state), then you get branded and targeted. Some of them "get their revenge" too if someone doesn't support a particular bill someone else has run. I have seen it happen time and time again. We actually have a conservative state representative in my district who tries to listen to people, not just his special-interest cronies. He disagreed with a state senator on a bill. The senator then went on a major attack, sending letters containing untrue allegations to convention Rep's and other dirty attacks. The rep endured the storm, but still had to get past quite a number of things first. The mayor of my town, also a conservative Republican (whom I support quite a bit), is the same way. Cross him, and he'll get his revenge. Definitely, it's the liberal ones in other areas--like the governor's race in Washington State.

All in all, though, if you make your point in a forceful and forthright manner, keeping your composure, yet making sure your point is heard, the other guy is still going to look like the turkey. Howard Dean anyone?

Great email. Have you received a reply yet? I haven't seen a clip of Aaron Broussard's performance lately (how many times did we see it last week, on EVERY network and cable channel?)....that alone proves the MSM is on to Broussard's lies.

I'm not holding my breath waiting on a biased press such as NBC to apologize for any scam they pull on their viewers.
Just as CNN is looking for the sensational so did Tim Russert and Meet The Press fall into the crying game.

I sent the story around to a few people. I did not get any replies. I'm afraid they blow off most of the mail they get.

Assuming anyone actually looked at this story, they may not want this particular one because a minor Louisianna pol lying on TV isn't big news and exposing this man in the face of all the misery after Katrina might be viewed as insensitive.

In the case of Russert, I don't think he would bother, no MSM has picked up on Broussard's story. Russert will let it slide.

Today on Fox O'Reilly was interviewing a fellow about the anti-American slant that the MSM puts on stories.

The fellow said that our media has become more worldly.

The MSM does not see loyalty towards this government.

I believe that is a good observation.

why he altered the story and shifted blame to the Federal Government.

probably not life insurance but a wrongful death suit would yield bigger dollars against the feds instead of the locals.

More than likely, this was politcal theatre exploitation of a 92 year old mom's death and has nothing to do with money.

Like I said before, those who are most hysterical seem like they might have the most to hide. Blanco, Nagin, Landrieu and Broussard.

Good moral people had better arm themselves to the hilt and prepare to fight we in the US are in the process of having our country overthrown from within!

Ross Perot already fixed the election that brought Clinton to power in the first place. That could have been perceived as a coup. Freerepublic was born fighting the Clinton corruption. Then 1994 occurred and the Republicans swept into power in the legislature. Then right after the OKC bombing, Clinton's fed cronies were actively going after US militia and Vast Right Wing Consiprators while ignoring any possible connection to Islamic terrorism. So the situation was much more bleak back then. Now we have some lame duck Democrats having to cry like babies on TV just to get the average American citizen to even notice them. Their allies in Hollywood have to threaten to 'leave the country' to get the average American to even notice that the lefties are even upset. While duck hunting sure can be fun, there are bigger game to go after (Chinese Dragons). Hollywood just had a miserable summer and its over priced talentless stars are too stoned to realize that the Party is over.
