Roberts Reveals His Favorite Movies

2 hours, 22 minutes ago

After two days of intense legal questioning, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts finally addressed a subject most Americans could relate to: His favorite movies are "Doctor Zhivago" and "North by Northwest."

Frustrated by Roberts' answers, Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y., suggested on Wednesday that if he dared to ask the nominee his favorite films, he would get a discussion of cinematography and why "Casablanca" is considered one of the greatest.

Instead, Roberts answered flat out, bringing laughter from the audience and senators alike.

"North by Northwest," Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 classic

It makes those lists because (a.) it looks so good and (b.) it's so "big."

I know I'm inviting flames with what I'm about to say, but here goes anyway ... I think "Gone With The Wind" falls into the same category, although I love "GWTW" and can watch it over and over again, where I have to work to get through "Zhivago."

"GWTW" looks good and is a "big" movie and, I'll concede, has a lot more sprightly plotline than "Zhivago," but "GWTW" ends up on a lot of "greatest movies of all time" lists, too, and IMHO it doesn't belong there. Even though I love it, and I think it rightfully has a place among the Top 25 or Top 30 movies of all time, I don't think it's among the elite.

"After all, it’s not that awful — you know what the fellow said…In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed — they produced Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce…? The cuckoo clock. So long, Holly."

Welles is on the screen for what, 10 minutes? Is there any other movie where a character is only on the screen for 10 minutes and completely dominates the proceedings to that degree?

Personally I loved Doctor Zhivago (visually beautiful and epic in scope and many great pieces of literature and movies include themes of illicit and or unrequited or tragic love) and North by Northwest for humor and the cinematography but I think any movie starring Cary Grant is great!

Other movies I’ll watch again and again whenever they are on are Bringing Up Baby,
Bull Durham, The Right Stuff, A Christmas Story, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein and Ben Hur, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, When Harry Met Sally and To Kill a Mocking Bird – how’s that for an eclectic list?

FYI, I collect old radio shows, and I have some MP3s of a British series Welles did during the '50s called "The Adventures of Harry Lime," where the plot line nominally "predated" Vienna ... the beginning is a pistol shot, then Welles does a voice over about how that was the shot that killed Harry Lime in the sewers of Vienna, but that it was the end of the story and not the beginning, that Harry Lime had many lives, which he knew because he was Harry Lime, then the zither music starts ... and Welles plays Lime as kind of a lovable expatriate rogue who's always getting involved in some kind of suspenseful intrigue. They're kind of uneven, some of them get out into the ozone plotwise, but the best of them are quite interesting to listen to and Welles plays the character wonderfully.

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" is an overrated film that contains lots of funny bits but suffers from the lack of a proper ending. The Broadway stage show, on the other hand, I highly recommend.

That's the whole point to the Holy Grail!! A totally lame ending!

Went past the Spam-A-Lot theater last time I was in NY. Wish I could have gone!!

What's wrong with Caddyshack, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, a Fish Called Wanda, and Princess Bride? Obviously this man called Judge Roberts should not be confirmed. Much too serious.

I must commend you on your exquisite taste. However, please don't forget Animal House and Stripes.

What's wrong with Caddyshack,

Now that would have been an answer LOL

Porky's would have probably been a worse one, however.
