The Normality of Gay Marriages [Hurl Alert]
NY Times Editorial ^ | September 17, 2005 | Editorial Writer(s)

There's nothing like a touch of real-world experience to inject some reason into the inflammatory national debate over gay marriages. Take Massachusetts, where the state's highest court held in late 2003 that under the State Constitution, same-sex couples have a right to marry. The State Legislature moved to undo that decision last year by approving a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages and create civil unions as an alternative. But this year, when precisely the same measure came up for a required second vote, it was defeated by a thumping margin of 157 to 39.

The main reason for the flip-flop is that some 6,600 same-sex couples have married over the past year with nary a sign of adverse effects. The sanctity of heterosexual marriages has not been destroyed. Public morals have not gone into a tailspin. Legislators who supported gay marriage in last year's vote have been re-elected. Gay couples, many of whom had been living together monogamously for years, have rejoiced at official recognition of their commitment.

As a Republican leader explained in justifying his vote switch: "Gay marriage has begun, and life has not changed for the citizens of the commonwealth, with the exception of those who can now marry who could not before." A Democrat attributed his change of heart to the beneficial effects he saw "when I looked in the eyes of the children living with these couples." Gay marriage, it turned out, is good for family values.

Some legislators who strongly oppose gay marriages also switched their votes this year for tactical reasons. They realized that the original measure was headed for defeat, and they had never really liked the part that created civil unions anyway. They are now pinning their hopes on an even harsher proposal...

Look at the effects of free sex, abortion, and divorce on our dwindling population and troubled kids. Duh. Just because you don't "see" something doesn't mean it's not happening. Good grief, people are incredibly shallow and short-sighted.

A gay marriage used to mean that a man and a woman were lighthearted, festive, and enjoying their wedded life together.

As for the current meaning of `gay marriage'.....

EWWWW!! HURL!!! RALPH!!!! BARF, BARF!!!!

Every national poll has shown the majority is against gay marriage.

So if tomorrow the majority of the country decided that we should reinstitute slavery for blacks, would that make it right? Seems to me that in a free society, we have no right to prevent anyone from doing anything that doesn't directly affect us. So while Democrats would prevent business owners from allowing their patrons so smoke cigarettes in their places of business and some Republicans would choose to outlaw any sex except sex between a man and a woman in the missionary position, they're both wrong. Freedom isn't just for you, it's for everyone.

"We can only hope that this new appeal to fear and bigotry will stumble over the reality, already apparent, that gay marriage is no threat to the larger community."

NOT

I hope this new appeal to normality and reality will be a huge success over the perversion that gay marriage is normal.

The problem is with your idea that freedom means a lack of constraints, when it means just the opposite. Freedom and Liberty are the internalization of law, what we once called "moral fiber". Once the will to voluntarily limit ourselves to a common moral framework dissolves and we refuse to rule ourselves from within, the only alternative is that we must be ruled from without. Freedom isn't for everyone, only for those who impose upon themselves the limits of common morality, as expressed in the Constitution and the original intent of the framers.

Of course the Left thinks abortion is cool and so is gay marriage since it looks normal. My values are not going to ever change because of what the New York Times considers "in fashion."

You are correct, but you missed my point which was that they were implying that the legislators came over to the gay side because it was politically expedient. The polls show it is not. Nowhere did I say that a simple majority should always rule.

As of a few weeks ago, only 44 sodomites were 'married' under the Spanish law.

Sure we do. Our government was set up to be a democratic republic. Outside of a very few statutes explicitly mentioned in the US Constitution and state constitutions, the people can generally legislate as they please through their elected representatives or direct referendum.

There's a reason that we do live under a Judeo-Christian style of law and not a Hindu caste system or Sharia Law. It's a reflection of the people's culture and viewpoints, and yes, minority groups are expected to conform.

Yep...I could not care less what consenting adults do behind closed doors, but DO NOT POSITION perversion as normalcy.

What is the purpose of marriage in society?

The purpose of marriage is to guarantee there will be future generations, and to grant legitimacy and identity to the offspring of that union.

Every human has a right to know who his father and mother are.

By definition, there can never be offspring of a homosexual relationship.
