The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Granny, I did note the address. I read on the main thread that the Islamic Society is one block away from the apartment on George Ave.

If the top half is missing, it makes one wonder if he was wearing a bomb vest.

Uniform reports from overseas suggest that the pattern for vest detonations is that the head and shoulders separate and land some yards away virtually intact. Sex and age are usually readily apparent. IDs can be made without having to resort to dental records. I have to wonder why the torso is "missing."

On this level, official and media reports referred to "warnings" about
possible renewal of Jemaah Islamiyah's suicide attacks somewhere in
Indonesia. Such reports, if not specific, are stunning in their semantics:
the terrorists have never retreated nor granted their enemy quarter.
Jemaah has never stopped planning and gathering resources for
operations. Indonesia’s authorities should be psychologically mobilized
non-stop against Jemaah and its sisters around the islands. So should
the rest of the world. These are lessons to all other democracies and
countries trying to become ones. The jihad wars against free societies
have been declared and are waged on a daily basis. Those countries
that haven’t been hit will eventually be hit and those who have been
targeted already will continue to be targeted. Even expect the sites that
have been reached by violence to be visited again: Not only Baghdad
and Basra, but also New York and London. The Jihadi terrorists are not
different from the previous foes the free world had to face such as
Nazis, Fascists, and Bolsheviks: For as long as they’ve marked a city or
a country with "dar al Harb" or placed its population under the lethal
status of "Kuffar" (infidels).

My colleague, Professor Zachary Abuza, author of Militant Islam and
South East Asia: Crucible of Terror, is a leading expert on Jemaah
Islamiyah (JI). He says its its connection to al-Qaeda has advanced
significant analysis on a tactical shift. Writing on the Counter Terrorism
Blog last Saturday, he stated, "JI was formerly close to Al Qaeda,
though that relationship has been in doubt owing to concerted
counter-terror operations that have led to the arrests of much of the
respective organization’s leadership." Moreover, he notes a technical,
tactical shift: an "apparent shift back to smaller bombs." Abuza asks:

Does this indicate the inability to procure the materials and
indicate limited human and material resources to put
together large bombs? Does it signify that the link to Al
Qaeda, which passed over $130,000 to JI for operations no
longer exist? The fact is we really don’t know the extent of
the current relationship.

Indeed, as other area experts and terror analysts concur, the modus
operandi regarding the type of bombs, and their transporters has
changed. The Jihadists, as I analyze in my forthcoming book, Future
Jihad (November 2005), are currently in a state of mutation, as is the
case with most organizations. Field experience and transformations are
crucial in the shaping of new tactics and means of delivery. Just as it is
less likely that a second Mohammad Atta team would proceed with the
exact same plans to pulverize two NYC landmarks, it is less likely for JI
to use the exact same material to blow up the same type of target in
the same city. Most likely some of the components have to change, at
least from a tactical angle. But these are only tactical analysis: what is
the big picture? Here are some main themes:

“They’re able to adapt rapidly, and their biological sonar is very effective,” said Naval Space and Warfare (SPAWAR) representative, Mark Yates, referring to the mammals’ special natural adaptations, such as an efficient hydrodynamic shape, and a very effective natural sonar system that can transmit and receive sound waves.

“The adaptations make the animals valuable partners in detecting threat swimmers,” added Sonar Technician (Submarines) 1st Class Dan Cook of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3. “Hardware-based systems have limitations that the dolphins make up for naturally, which helps them discriminate between objects and swimmers. This is particularly helpful in high noise environments, such as harbors and bays.”

Would the Dolphins be working up north, where the diver was found? Or only in the warm southern waters?

Dolphins are members of the whale family and are found in all oceans of the world, including the Pacific which compared to the Atlantic is mighty cold. I'm going to be very sad if I confirm the US Navy turned these intelligent, gentle creatures into cold blooded killers. Especially if they are indiscriminate in the killing. Better to use real pros, like Orcas.

One thing I would add is to always know where exits are. Most smaller stores between the big department stores have back doors for delivery which would be a good escape route if needed.

Fatah Wins 53%, HAMAS 26% of Seats in Local Elections

Gaza Palestine Satellite Channel Television in Arabic at 0815 GMT on 1 October begins to carry live from the "Palestinian Media Center" a news conference by Jamal al-Shawbaki, head of the Higher Local Elections Committee, who announces the results of the third phase of the local council elections held in the West Bank on 29 September 2005.

Al-Shawbaki says voter turnout reached 84 percent. He adds that the elections took place based on the amended elections law, which takes into account constituencies and party lists. He says that in accordance with the new law, only those registered in the voters lists were allowed to vote.

Al-Shawbaki announces that the elections took place in 104 local councils, 22 of which won uncontested. He notes that 144,000 were registered to vote for 1,018 seats during this stage.

Al-Shawbaki says these seats were distributed as follows:

Fatah won 547 seats; HAMAS won 265 seats; the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) won 55 seats; the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) won 13 seats; the People's Party won 18 seats; the Islamic Jihad won three seats; the independents won 58 seats; and families won 59 seats. Al-Shawbaki adds that the percentages are as follows:

Fatah: 53.73%

HAMAS: 26.03%

PFLP: 5.40%

DFLP: 1.28%

People's Party: 1.77%

Islamic Jihad: 0.29%

Independents: 5.70%

Families: 5.80%

He adds that Fatah won the seats of 51 local councils and HAMAS won the seats of 13 local councils. He notes that 40 local councils will be formed based on coalitions.

Al-Shawbaki thanks the Palestinian citizens, the Ministry of Education and teachers, and the Palestinian police.

At 0820 GMT, Al-Shawbaki begins to take questions.

Responding to a question, Al-Shawbaki says 17 prisoners were candidates, and most of them had won.

Responding to another question, Al-Shawbaki says: "In my opinion, the high turnout by Palestinians took place because Palestinians see the elections as a new struggle arena, and they want to convey to the international community that the Palestinian people, who are living and suffering under occupation, have the democratic ability to self-determination. Therefore, the international community must intervene to end the occupation, and give the Palestinians the freedom to establish a state."

IMO, absolutely, yes the US IS violating its own laws.

Yes, granny, you recalled correctly. It was actually toys enclosed in bags of candy, and there were 2 versions: one version was an airplane suspended between the 2 WTC towers and the other was a likeness of Osama bin Laden pushing on the 2 WTC towers. The serial number on the bottom of the "toys" was 911.

The candy, which was pulled from the market following complaints, was actually produced in China and marketed predominantly to Hispanic markets.
