Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Sunday he will contemplate next year whether to run for president in 2008.
"I will be considering it next year," Giuliani said during a visit to Denmark. But he added that playing with the idea of running for the Republican nomination for president did not mean he would actually do it.
"Sometime you warm up and get ready and you don't get in and pitch," he told reporters, in a baseball analogy.
Giuliani who was praised for his leadership following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, thanked Danish firefighters who raised $8,400 in support for their New York colleagues.
"To us it was the only thing we could do, raise money and show our support," firefighter Jens Hjorth said.
Eight firefighters from the station raised the money by recording a CD with six songs called "The Skyline Changed." They sold 27,000 copies.
On Sunday, the band members handed over a copy of the CD to Giuliani, who in return gave them a New York Fire Department hat.
Giuliani was in Denmark to speak at a business leadership conference in the Danish capital on Monday.
In 2000, Giuliani ran for the U.S. Senate, but dropped out after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
We, and in fact, the entire world are at war with the devout followers of Islam and Rudy understands as only a person who was downtown on 9/11 can. He saw firsthand what we are up against...and he won't forget!
As a note to my comment above about the war with the devout followers of Islam, let me add that moderate muslims may not comprise the frontline of the enemy's position, but to the extent that moderates do not stand firmly against the hardliners, they are collaberators.
Rudy may not be as conservative as some would like, but there is IMO something more important than conservatism when one is at war. And that is effectiveness at winning the war. Of course, Rudy will have to endure through the campaign process and will have to define his positions clearly. But I, for one, am glad he is thinking of running. He has already been battle-tested and emerged as a capable leader.
You're talking about his father, the late Coach George Allen. George Allen Jr. is a winner, Virginia State Delegate, Virginia State Senator, Congressman, Governor, and now Senator. Allen can win in 08, and he's got my support.
It'll be political suicide for conservatives if Guilani gets the GOP nod.
The 2nd biggest issue facing America after WOT is the three-headed monster: Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid. Until a GOP candidate grows some genitals and proposes nothing short of an immediate phase-out of these economic-killing entitlement programs, then you might as well kiss this country goodbye.
Guilani has no business running for President - he'd be great as head of Justice Dept though.

I'm sure you think that adherence to "social issues" is a calculation, but for the vast majority of Republicans they are deeply held beliefs -- the basics of right and wrong in a civilized society, regardless of what is at the "fore".

People forget the importance of an energized base. It's very hard to win without that. And if you have an energized base, you can win with wider margines.
Wrong. Keeping America safe is a given no matter who's President. Even if Hillary is elected, she's going to have to address terrorism or risk the wrath of Americans.
Economic and energy issues are extremely (no pun intended) important. Guilaini is a big government liberal who'll accomplish zilch when it comes to reforming the tax code or phasing out entitlements.

Yeah, she could bomb asprin factories and pardon terrorists for votes, like her hubby. And reinstate the Gorelick Wall. And shut down Able Danger. And sell nuclear technology for campaign cash from rogue states. Need I go on?
IMHO, we need to ensure that we continue to have a society - then we can worry about it's morality. It's going to take a high-profile Republican to defeat Hillary, someone with strength and gravitas.
To me, and it's only a personal opinion, Rudy's stand on social issues, while often at odds with mine, don't mean a hill of beans when compared to a maintaining a strong offensive posture in the war (alone, if needs be), strong defense and implementing strict immigration controls.
Rudy may not be what you want socially, but he can beat Hillary, and to me that trumps everything else.
Where would you get that idea? You're wrong.

How can you say that with a straight face? Is he running against her now?
You're right that Hillary & Rudy have similar positions on social issues. However Rudy has an actual track record of achievement in cleaning up NYC, plus he's an authentic New Yorker instead of some carpetbagger from wherever. I think he could defeat her 2006 senate reelection bid and pretty much take her out of contention as a 2008 presidential contender.
I really wish he would do it since he has about zero chance of winning the Republican nomination in 2008.
Giuliani is a very smart ambitious professional politician, which means he can and will change his positions on issues as it fits his needs. He knows wooing conservatives during the primaries is the key to winning the Repub nod. That's why I think it's only a matter of time before he announces his support for restrictions on abortions, and that he is now against partial birth abortions. He's also going to distance himself from his pro gay stances.
