So you have no problem with someone who donated to Al Gore for president?...and Lloyd Bentsen...

As has been mentioned, Gore in '88 was pro-life, and it was the peak of his and Tipper's assault on profane music lyrics. Lloyd Bentsen in 1988 was more conservative than at least 40, if not more, of our present Republican Senators. The only reason he had a D by his name was that he was from Texas, grew up in Texas, and at the time it was a Democratically controlled state. When Bentsen was in his formative years, it was essentially a one party state. Of Bentsen, Bush 41, and Quayle, Bentsen was perhaps the most "conservative" of the group.

My company's CEO donated to our Democrat Gov's re-election campaign in '04. He's nearly as conservative as I am, but it was a calculated donation for purely non-political (at least in the governmental sense) reasons. The fact that those contributions are so far out of line with the rest of her donations is far more important, and even they don't really matter all that much.

"Harry Reid supports her, and suggested she would be acceptable."

That's not what I heard on the bottom of the hour news from FOX affiliate. I heard that Reid urged Bush to pick her.

The top line (in bold) wasn't my assertion, but I was looking for information either way.

I'm not sure how to interpret your post (italics) though. It seens to disagree, then agree with the proposition that Reid supports the choice and suggests she will be aceptable. Did Reid urge GWB to pick Ms. Miers so he (Reid) could then knock her down?

Sure we do....but GWB didn't chose her in a vaccuum! I tend to give him some credit for putting some thought into this choice. Why? Because he has a track record of choosing well. This is an important matter....a lifetime appointment.....is it OK if we gather the facts about her, look at them with some perspective and then decide?

Of course it's OK to gather facts. So far I'm underwhelmed. I hope she is a female Thomas and serves 50 years. I hope I eat crow for the rest of my days. So far I'm still disappointed when Luttig was available. With respect to Bush's "track record of choosing well.deciding well" there are few decisions I've not been a fan of. I hope he is right and I'm wrong on this one.

Re evidence that Ms Miers is a strict constructionist...

She and the president both said she was in the Oval Office during the announcement.

Does that count?

Imagine if Remember ... the Democrats nominated someone with no judicial experience and had lottery commission had the *ACLU* on their resume.

The Republicans would go ballistic vote 96-3 to confirm.

Laura Bush's "desperate housewives" jokes at a press club dinner in Washington several months ago and her daughters' recent attendance at a homosexual "marriage" ceremony speak clearly as to the disregard of Biblical morality and traditional values on the part of the females of the Bush family.

Get a grip, people.

This person may end up being the most conservative SC Justice in history. Nobody knows her better than GWB. If he knows her so well and she ends up being a mistake, then GWB's legacy will rightfully suffer. Certainly, this is not something GWB wants to do, so have some faith for the time being.

If you oppose her because she is ugly, or single, you are an idiot. If you oppose her because of her lack of judicial experience, you don't understand that is an advantage. It's what is in the heart that matters and Bush has picked someone that he is certain will help his legacy.

Somehow I'm not convinced that this is the best possible nominee. Better than Brown, Luttig, Estrada, Olson, etc? It doesn't look that way to me. I would like to be wrong.

he picked a female version of Abe Fortas. he picked a female version of Abe Fortas.

Abe Fortas was a corrupt crook who would have had to be impeached, had he been approved. Bad example, unless you have evidence that she is also corrupt.

Would you people relax? Sheesh....

Jay Sekulow - ACLJ (the anti-ACLU and Conservative):
“Once again, President Bush showed exceptional judgment in naming Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court to replace Justice O’Connor,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, who argues regularly before the high court and has a pro-life protest case at the high court this term. “At a time when the high court is facing some of the most critical issues of the day – including a number of cases dealing directly with abortion and life issues – the person who replaces Justice O’Connor is critical. Harriet Miers is an excellent choice with an extraordinary record of service in the legal community and is certain to approach her work on the high court with a firm commitment to follow the Constitution and the rule of law. I have been privileged to work with her in her capacity as White House counsel. She is bright, thoughtful, and a consummate professional and I enthusiastically endorse her nomination.” Sekulow added: “We look forward to a speedy confirmation process and will work aggressively to ensure that Harriet Miers gets full and fair consideration before the Senate. We call on members of the Senate to reject the partisan political rhetoric and focus on the judicial philosophy of this conservative mainstream nominee.” Sekulow said the ACLJ will begin mobilizing a national campaign to ensure that Miers is confirmed. Sekulow said he will generate support for the nominee through his daily radio broadcast that reaches 1.5 million listeners, through his weekly television show, by using direct mail, phone calls, and emails to a list approaching one million supporters. “We know the intentions of the liberal left – to do anything possible to derail this nominee,” said Sekulow. “We are prepared to meet those challenges head on and ensure that this battle ends with the confirmation of Harriet Miers as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.”

Close enough. This was a New Englander bs, no-stomach-for-a-fight sell out. Both Bush's had two picks and one cancelled out the other.... One gets the sense that they want abortion in America-- they just don't want it in the devloping world-- so we can continue to get cheap third world labor. New World New Englanders who hollowly invoke Reagan, betray the base and strengthen the Left-- the Clintons in particular.
