So it really is ol' Harriet.

Well, it is not a bold choice.

Time will tell whether or not it is a smart or good choice. This thread has a lot of heat, not much light. We know he didn't pick anyone we really wanted. Whether or not he made a good choice... I'll be watching Hugh Hewitt's blog.

It is disappointing, though. I really wanted an in-your-face choice.

Bush: " I know her heart, I know her character..."

Funny. I dont care about either. I care about her professional qualifications to be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. I dont care whether she is qualified to be a social worker or a parole officer.

No one ever accused RINOs of being smart.

I don't think this is "stupid." I believe it to be "deliberate." And... that's frightening.

"Bush doesn't need votes anymore - he couldn't care less about the "base". He's giving the Senate elite and his cronies what they want. Soon he'll be teeing off with daddy and brother Bill."

He is off scott free, but the Senate Repubs should FEEL OUR RAGE..THEY ARE THE HOPE TO THE CONSERVATIVE BASE LETS FREEP THEM UNTIL THEY CAVE AND STOP THIS.

I didn't catch the whole context but W just mentioned her work with Exodus International. If that's the case, you know the libs are going to have a major hissy fit.

But a person's position on abortion tells you an awful lot about THE CHARACTER OF THAT PERSON.

So you must think so little of Laura and Condi...?
Everyone knows for a fact that she's pro-choice?

When we went to vote in 2000 we thought we were getting a Ronald Reagan Conservative.

Not at all. Bush was running as a socialist (Medicare prescription drug plan, etc.), just like Al Gore. I voted for him ONLY because I didn't want Gore & Kerry picking SCOTUS judges. Maybe I shouldn't have bothered.

I don't understand why people think that if Roe/Wade is overturned...that this will end abortion? It will just encourage traveling to other states or countries who do.....why is this the only issue for some people??

A surprising number of people DO think the overturning of Roe V Wade will end abortion, but sadly it will not.

I hope you're right b/c she's not gonna get any support from me in her confirmation. The Dems can have her.

Respectfully, I must disagree. I don't think that the nomination of Miers is a straightforward move. I believe that she is the first volley in a long and protracted battle for this coveted seat.

Also, IMHO, President Bush is not an idiot. He is my President and my son's boss. Right now, Junior is somewhere near Ramadi, so I am one relieved nervous wreck this morning (USMC says no personnel captured).

The DUers are never right, unless it is about welfare benefits or pubic lice cures. I have to question your intelligence to even suggest that they know anything about President Bush, other than their blind hatred of him.

But it also means that we don't know anything about her next votes as Associate Justice!

Once they're confirmed, nobody can predict any justices vote. We've been sold candidates as "conservatives" in the past only to find them swing way liberal on the bench. That's the trend. I don't know of any cases that were the reverse. Legislating from the bench is just a term.

Saying the 2nd Amendment is all about the national guard and that the right to privacy includes abortion on demand isn't necessarily legislating from the bench. It is simply a liberal interpretation of the Constitution. We may disagree, but what else is new? It's all a part of God's plan.

Ouch. And she was in her forties at that point; someone of that age should've had time to clarify her political opinions. If they've changed since then, that leads me to question the steadfastness of her beliefs.

Will broken glass conservatives stay home in '06?

The better question may be whether they will vote conservative or vote Republican. ;^)

The most conservative of the Bushes is Jeb, not Dubya.

Dubya is definitely his father's son. If she does rule as a strict constructionist on the court, I will be surprised.

I think this mess insures that the next Republican nominee is going to have to have more conservative credentials than Dubya had. Conservatives are going to be on the warpath in '08.

Bush could have gone done as a great president. He chose the path of mediocrity instead.
