Hispanic civil rights group convenes here today

October 13, 2005 — The largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the country will be here today, seeking ways to improve the lives of Hispanics in the state.

The National Council of La Raza will hold discussions at the Raúl Yzaguirre School for Success today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with statewide groups that work with Hispanics.

That meeting is closed to the public, but there will be an open reception featuring several Hispanic leaders at 7 p.m. today at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel.

In the earlier closed session, leaders from statewide groups will discuss ways they can work with NCLR and each other to improve the quality of life for Hispanics in Texas.

“The meetings are an attempt to bring more visibility to Latino issues in the next legislative session,” said Jessica Muñoz, the state advocacy coordinator for NCLR.

She said the meeting with NCLR’s Texas Affiliate Network was one of the most important events for the group. The organization has more than 300 formal affiliates and works with 35,000 groups and individuals.

“It’s a chance for us to know what the needs are in these communities and how NCLR can collectively leverage our resources to see that those needs are being addressed,” Muñoz said.

The 7 p.m. reception will feature state Rep. Rene Oliveira, D-Brownsville, Mayor Eddie Treviño Jr. and current NCLR president Janet Murguia. Local organizations, such as Su Clínica Familiar and the La Esperanza Home for Boys, will also attend.

Oliveira will speak in his capacity as a member of the NCLR board of directors, Muñoz said, and Murguia will speak about the importance of affiliate organizations to the NCLR’s mission.

La Raza is "a hispanic civil rights group" in the same sense that the Nazis were an Aryian civil rights group.

I lived in Crystal City when La Raza took over the local government. As I kid, I had to go to school in the next town because not only was my life in danger, they didn't teach in english any more. Being a gringo growing up in that town taught me a lot. Mostly how to fight for my life.

"In the earlier closed session, leaders from statewide groups will discuss ways they can work with NCLR and each other to improve the quality of life for Hispanics in Texas."

Isn't it up to the Hispanics to improve their own quality of life? I don't have people meeting on my behalf to improve the quality of MY life.

I want a BMW M3, dammit! Make it happen! :)

It’s a chance for us to know what the needs are in these communities and how NCLR can collectively leverage our resources to see that those needs are being addressed

1. Give us back Texas, California, New Mexico and Arizona
2. Allow all illegal Aliens to vote in US elections
3. All illegals deserve driver's licenses
4. The government should be building daycare centers and hospitals strictly for the use of illegal aliens at no cost to the "peoples" - the US owes us this since we take jobs not even black people will take
5. Every business must employ spanish only speaking people, no need to learn English since you are giving us back the states you stole from us.
6. Open borders, anyone can come anytime
7. We are not illegal aliens as the law states, we are simply undocumented workers.

GO TO HELL LA RAZA - a racist scumbag organization

If they have their way...the SW will be annexed as Aztlan
Axtec pyramids rebuilt and the sacrificing of gringos and anglos will be nightly entertainment..

Hopefully the food at the newly renamed Dennitos won't be too spicey...

imo

Not only is La Raza racist ,it is also ignorant. Before Texas belonged to Anglos , it belonged to the Comanches and the Apaches. Mexicans wanted the Anglos to be a buffer between themselves and the Indians. When the Texans found out the Mexicans were to cowardly and weak to defend Texas against the slaughter of the Comanches, they knew the Mexicans did not deserve Texas. Texans will give Texas back to the Comanches before they give it to the Mexicans. It is a wonder the La Raza people can remember to breath air.

Uh huh. After spending my drive back from lunch behind about three different carloads of hispanic women in run down beat up cars glaring at me for encouraging them to move their ass little faster, I think I know what's gotten into my craw about this.

One: It used to be people were at least a little afraid of trying to sneak in. So just the able bodied men came and sent money back. No more. The whole family is sauntering on through.

Two: The illegals are getting an "attitude" because they see safety and power in sheer numbers. I see it getting worse everyday. Humility is being replaced by militancy. I think they learned this from muslims. Play nice until you are the majority then BAM!

Three: Tied to two and it relates to the fact the hispanic organizations in Texas composed of legal immigrants and second or third generation folks are starting to flex political muscle and are silently rooting for a greater majority. I wouldn't be surprised to see it manifest itself in the hispanic border and customs people turning a blind eye. Yeah that's pure conjecture and sure to attract howls but what constitutes a border is getting a little confused out there.

It's out of control and no amount of back pedalling/promising and election year politicking by Rick Perry will change my perception that he just doesn't give a damn. Bill White's a democrat but I think he'll do more than Perry. And he's pretty funny to boot.

Most of the Hispanic population is clustered along the coastal areas of Texas. Texas should exercise its right to break up into three separate states. This way the other less Hispanic dominated areas of the state will not endure the folly of the corrupted areas of Texas.

And as pertains the issue of doing the jobs others won't - Okay I'll buy that for farm work. But don't tell me kids can't benefit from learning the value of hard work by working the Hobart dish washing machine or bussing tables at a restaurant. I grew up in a border city and did that work from 16 to 18 years of age.

No doubt LaRaza will be given a powerful position in Bush's North American Community.

The one that you will be paying for but have no say in.

I'm not so sure about that. It's the big cities that are busting at the seams with illegal folks - more plentiful jobs and attractive to the younger set.

The keyword you used is illegal. It is the Hispanic fascist areas of Texas which are demanding we digest all of Mexico. If the people in Corpus Christi want to single handedly take in all of Mexico they should do it on their own dime and keep them in South Texas.

La Raza means - "The Race". Implication being that others peoples are inferior

I'll bet these 'tards fancy themselves as Aztecs. As inheritors of the glories of the Aztec empire

Dear Sara Ines Calderon......

Civil Rights in and of itself is racist....who's civil rights trumps who's civil rights ? Whos higher on the alledged list ......Gabacho's or Mohows ?

Neither in my book if ya work hard, pay yer way and contribute your fair share to the American dream as long as your physically able to do so...."legally"

Anyone who plays the race card is a POS loser. If one is caught doing it , regardless of their color or position in life, fine that person, organization, company incrementally for each instance under the basis of a liberty and justice for all ethic.

Call it a day and get on with making america the better place in can be as the melting pot of ethnicity is not at question with regards to illegal immigration .....crime is Sara !

La Raza is just one more "keep the hate alive" group profiting from the fears of idiots who pay em thinking things will change. Well the NAACP, KKK, La Raza, JDL etc etc have no intention of curing that illness which lines their pockets........

Wordsmith and spin the presstitute position on "illegally crossing borders" all ya want as it "pays"......you.

I think it is charming that the La Raza people want the original inhabitants of Texas back. Maybe George Bush should do for the Comanches what was done for Israel .The complete border area of Texas could be given back to the Comanches. The Comanches could have an independent country. I doubt the Comanches would be willing to share power with the elite of Mexico.
