Texas - have you seen this one?

When you're from Texas, people that you meet ask you questions like, Do you have any cows?" "Do you have horses?" "Bet you got a bunch of guns, eh?"

They all want to know if you've been to Southfork. They watched Dallas.

Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast, and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything ever will be.. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It's Texas. Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You might get it maybe after a second or two, but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you?

In every man, woman and child on this planet, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off in a pickup. There is some little bit of Texas in everyone.

Did you ever hear anyone in a bar go, "Wow...so you're from Iowa? Cool, tell me about it?" Do you know why? Because there's no place like Texas.

Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom. We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Crockett and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes. John Wayne paid to do the movie himself. That is the Spirit of Texas.

Texas is Sam Houston capturing Santa Ana at San Jacinto.

Texas is "Juneteenth" and Texas Independence Day.

Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett National Forest.

Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend.

Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill Country.

Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas.

Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.

Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork.

Texas is Mexican food like nowhere else, not even Mexico.

Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome.

Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Janis Joplin, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Darrell Royal, Rick Husband, Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn, Lyndon B.Johnson.

Texas is great companies like Dell Computer, Texas Instruments and Compaq. And LOCKHEED MARTIN AEROSPACE, Home of the F-16 Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter.

Texas is NASA.

Texas is huge herds of cattle and miles of crops.

Texas is skies blackened with doves, and fields full of deer.

Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local High School Football game on Friday nights and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and for the Night In Old San Antonio River Parade in San Antonio. Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities.

If it isn't in Texas, you probably don't need it.

NO ONE DOES ANYTHING BIGGER OR BETTER THAN IT'S DONE IN TEXAS.

By federal law, Texas is the only state in the U.S. that can fly its flag at the same height as the U.S. flag. Think about that for a second. You fly the Stars and Stripes at 20 feet in Maryland, California, or Maine and your state flag, whatever it is, goes at 17 feet. You fly the Stars and Stripes in front of Pine Tree High in Longview or anyplace else at 20 feet, the Lone Star flies at the same height - 20 feet. Do you know why? Because it is the only state that was a republic before it became a state.

Also, being a Texan is as high as being an American down here. Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington, D.C. and we can divide our state into five states at any time if we wanted to! We included these things as part of the deal when we came on. That's the best part, right there.

Texas even has its own power grid!!

If you are a REAL TEXAN you won't even need to be told to pass this on!"

Adm Nimitz and Gen Eisenhower

While Ike was born in Dennison Texas, he was raised in Abilene Kansas. But he was a great enough American for both states to claim him.

I've been in both towns BTW, in fact I'm sitting less than a dozen miles from Dennison as I type, while Abilene Kansas is on the way to my mother and brother's.

Abilene Texas, OTOH, is where my younger son in law is from, and where his parents still live. We won't mention where my other son-in-law is from, but his Dad is a USAF veteran.

Here's Snopes take on the division which by the way is open to the other 49 states also.

Yes, but as I pointed out, the other 49 states require the Congress's consent. Texas already has that check-box filled. You even quoted the part where Congress agreed to it already. That's what makes Texas's situation different. All that's left is an act of the Texas state legislature (which will probably never happen as you stated).

After such a crazy week, a nice fun thread has been a breath of fresh air. Thanks!

Having lived in San Antonio for well over 40 years I must say Viva, Mi Tierra!!

The following was sent to me a year or so ago and I'm just passing it along for fun. Yes I know about Texas v. White and I'm not posting it to argue over. It's just for a good hearted chuckle. (Now if you want to argue about something, it should be Chili!!, LOL)

"Please note that Texas is the only state with a legal right to secede from the Union (please refer to the Texas-American Annexation Treaty of 1848).

We Texans love y'all, but we'll miss you too.

Texas has given all those complainers plenty of time to get used to the election results. After seeing the whiners along the campaign route, the folks from Texas are considering taking matters into our hands.

Here is our solution:

#1: In 2008, let Hilldabeast become President of the United States. (all 49 other states.)

#2: George W. Bush becomes the President of the Republic Of Texas.

So what does Texas have to do to survive as a Republic?

1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas. (we will control the space industry.)

2. We refine over 85% of the gasoline in the United States.

3. Defense Industry. (we have over 65% of it) The term "Don't mess with Texas," will take on a whole new meaning.

4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of Texas will need for the next 300 years. Yankee states? Sorry about that.
5. Natural Gas - Again we have all we need and it's too bad about those northern states. Billery will figure a way to keep them warm....

6. Computer Industry - we currently lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications: Small places like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Atmel, Applied Materials, Ball Semiconductor, Dallas Semiconductor, Delphi, Nortel, Alcatel, Etc, Etc. The list goes on and on.

7. Health Centers - We have the largest research centers for Cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world and other large health planning centers.

8. We have enough colleges to keep us going: UT Texas, A&M, Texas Tech, Rice, SMU, University of Houston, Baylor, UNT, Texas Women's University, Ivy grows better in the south anyway

9. We have a ready supply of workers. (just open the border when we need some more)

10. We have control of the paper industry, plastics, insurance, etc.

11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the Texas National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. We don't have an army but since everybody down here has at least six rifles and a pile of ammo, we can raise an army in 24 hours if we need it. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over a couple Texas Rangers.

12. We are totally self sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables and lets not forget seafood from the gulf. And everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. Don't need any food.

This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic Of Texas in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have.

Now to the rest of the United States under President Billery:
Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Billery will be able to drive around in her 9 mile per gallon Limo. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes.

You won't have any TV as the space center in Houston will cut off your communications. You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes but since all of the DemocRATS have predicted global warming, you will not need the gas.

Signed, The People in Texas."

Cowboy Up!

Texans share a national identity in a way that the people's of most other states do not. However, things are changing. Most of the people now live in three huge urban areas.

You do know that not all of Texas is humid, right? The entire Texas Big Bend region is part of the Chihuahuan desert.

Did you have to spend a lot of time outside in the Texas heat? I will agree that a little goes a long way.

It always felt strange to me to receive all of those Christmas cards with sleighs, snowmen and snow covering the ground and the trees while I was wearing shorts. Christmas weather always felt like February to me. However, my sister reported they actually had snow on Christmas day last year.

I was 7 years old when I experienced my first and only snow that stayed on the ground in Houston. I missed the great San Antonio snow event by a year. I believe they had snow on the ground for 13 days. Of course that could have been one of those tall Texas tales told to me by a native of San Antonio.

I don't have a picture of the Rio Frio handy, so the Rio Grande will have to do.

Henry Sylvester

Actually James Austin Sylvester, according to the Texas Handbook Online. Sylvester was a sergeant in the Regular Texas Army, but retained the rank of Captain in the reserves, and was later Commisioned a Captain in the regular Calvary.

El Gato was never a sergeant, but he was a Captain in the Reserves. :)

Captain J.A. Sylvester is buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. He never married, and AFAIK left no descendants, and since he was originally from Maryland, probably had no near relatives in Texas or Louisiana where he moved after leaving Texas and where he died. One of these days when I'm down visiting my daughters and granddaughter (the darling Miss V. ) We'll go by the grave and pay our respects. One Captain to another, and one old cat to another.

What a bunch of baloney! Isn't Texas that little state down by Mexico...about 1/3rd the size of ALASKA?

I've heard of it but never had any reason to go there.

One little correction, though--the Texas anthem is not the Eyes of Texas. That is the University of Texas fight song.

According to the UT Band web site, "Eyes of Texas" is the UT Alma Mater, while "Texas Fight", aka "Texas Taps" is the official fight song.

When I passed through Canadian Customs a couple of weeks ago, the agent asked where are you from. I said Texas and the customs agent immediatly said " Got any guns?"

The movie was an abomination. The movie could have been, The Dukes Of Hazard Start a Whorehouse. The stage play was so much better. The worst part is that a lot of the movie, crap songs, etc. has/have been incorporated into the play now.

I went to a revival production in San Antonio about five years ago. It was not at all like I remembered the original Off Broadway production.

Congress has already consented in the admission treaty that Texas can split up into no more than five states. All that is left is for the state legislature to decide if they want to. That makes it a unique situation. Any other state needs to convince Congress of its desires. Texas already has that.

My daughter, with a JD from the University of Texas School of Law, tells me that the provision was not included when Texas was readmitted to the Union after the War of Yankee Aggression. But she's been known to be wrong... :) I'll ask her husband, who also has a JD from UT Law. 'Course he's from New Jersey, and sometimes asks me questions about Texas Law (Both are licensed to practice in Texas as well, and they both passed the bar on the first try, in different years though, he graduated first, but she took the *Texas* Bar exam first. He just passed his CPA exams as well She just had my grand daughter ;). My younger daughter is a grad student at UT, but both daughters are graduates of Austin College, the oldest continuously operating college in Texas, IIRC, although it and Baylor are very close in that regard)

Add about a tablespoon of Hershys' 100% cocoa to the beans when you start to soak them. Great gas reducer.
