I know, Google is "wrong". Google only yields what the search bots find. In my post 425 I give a link to the source of the article. I have met the author (Bob Wheeler) personally.

I first read both of the articles like this that he wrote for Texas Independence Day on longhornfanzone.com, a now defunct Texas fans website.

Not trying to be a pain, I just like to give credit where it's due.

I live in a "pump patch" myself down in south Texas. Did either of Y'all ever get down around the Freer or Bruni area or anywhere around Laredo?

Have either of you ever driven down U.S. 59 between Freer and Laredo at night right after the first good cool snap hits and listened to the tarantula's pop under your tires?

Yep! I've driven 59 Freer to Laredo many times in my life.

When I wuz a young'un (and I'm talkin' well over 50 years ago now) there was horned toads all over everywhere......
I ain't seen one of them little critters in years.......
They just ain't around anymore like they used to be.......

We used to take highway 16 out of Freer up to Tilden and eat at the old Cowboy Cafe
It's gone now too..
They had autographed pictures of Tex Ritter hanging on all the walls of that place and great food too.....

Whether they are New Yorkers, Texans, Californians or Parisians, I have never had much use for folks who had to draw on imaginary attributes of geography to make up for all too real deficits of personality.

I lived in Texas for four years, and for the life of me I can not tell you where this pride comes from. Its like this big family secret no one is telling. It is not apparent. It is as if at one time somebody knew thay texas was so great, the story got exagerated ( like everything in texas) and then.... someone forgot the original reason.

We are in the Waco area, but she refused to consider Baylor even though many of her friends chose to go there -- the "too close to home" syndrome for her.

Well Baylor is a big school. These days, or any days for that matter, I'd prefer not to send my kids, or now grandkids, nieces, nephews, etc, to a big school. Baylor isn't the mega-school that UT and A&M are, but it's still big. Big is fine for grad school, since the individual grad programs are nearly self contained and form a (really) small school within the larger one. Plus by the time they are grad students all the temptations that go with the big school town are not so tempting, and they are mature enough to mostly resist those that are.

My older daughter also looked at Baylor and Trinity, before deciding to stay home and go to Austin College.

Seeing that you live in Connecticut, I can see where you lack the personality to have a good time and a bit of fun. Having lived on Long Island, and spending a good bit of time in your state, I understand how it could sap your sense of humor.

So, are you self-identifying as one of the one's I was talking about who need a geography crutch to make up for a personality deficit? Or is your reply a fine example of the much-vaunted Texas sense of humor?

BTW Long Island is not CT and I'll bet the time you spent in CT was in Fairfield County, essentially suburban NY. The sense of humor here in the home of Colt Pistols, Stetson hats and George W's birthplace as well is just fine thank you.
