The past ten days I have been getting ad windows while my hard drive spins up and I can only see the ad when I exit.
I downloaded and paid for Spyware Doctor after it told me that I had 166 "infections" and set the "on guard" function assuming it would remove the infections.
They are still there and every time I try to find a removal tool it only gives me the option of scanning.
Have I been had?
Please tell me you didn't get this "Spyware Doctor" by clicking an ad.
How is it different from spybot or adaware?
Just goes to show ya, you can't teach an Old Professor new tricks. ;-)
If you've been had I've been had. Same thing happened to me. I downloaded it and can honestly say I noticed no diference and the "notice" still pops up. This has been going on for 2+ months.
I use Adaware and Spybot.
Free and no problems. At work and at home.
Anyways, go to Spybot.com and download the free antispyware tool. It is effective and honest.
As far as I'm concerned, there are three reputable cleaners for spyware.
Microsoft Anti-Spyware (free)
Spybot Search and Destroy
Lavasoft's Ad-Aware
Sorry to have to tell you this.
A while back I got some sort of adware that went really deep. If you erased it, it just reinstalled on bootup. I tried several adware removal programs. Then I tried and bought Spyware Doctor - and for me - it completely eliminated the problems and I have not had an adware incident since... That's my experience anyway...
Make sure you use the Live Update feature to get the latest adware definitions for it to check for...
Good luck!
Adaware, here it is, free:

I use Webroot Spy Sweeper. Best $30 investment I've spent.
Doing a little more research, it doesn't look like you've been "had," it's not like it's completely worthless. It may work, just not as well as the free ones. Just so happens that some of the best things on the internet are free.
Never, ever, ever, ever download any spyware software from an ad or anything.
It is spyware itself.
Download Spybot Search and Destroy and also Microsoft Antispyware.
I have a pernicious little sucker though that I can't seem to get rid of even with these programs. Luckily all it does is change my IE start page, and I never ue IE.

de hijack pc's with it all the time
other than that look at rootkits, and sysinternals.com has a good tool
I will say it doesn't look like Spyware Doctor is spyware, but I just am cautioning about downloading software from ads.
see my hijackthis post.
I help old codgers like you all the time...
QUIT SURFING PORN !!
heh
See if there is an online data update for the package (Spyware Doctor). Check to make sure that all unnecessary network ports with incoming signals are closed. Hopefully, that information will help.
If neither helps, there's not much that can be done, other than installing a whole operating system that's more frequently updated with security fixes.
I use the following (due to development working well for so many platforms, BSD license being conducive to commercial work,...), although some extra time was required for installing and configuring.
http://www.netbsd.org/
A copy of Redhat Linux or something like that would be much easier to install in a workstation, but the software licenses aren't as good for commercial development.
Not if you paid by VISA...
If you paid by VISA, call the vendor if you have a number and tell them to give you credit since the product isn't working, or you will have to call VISA to have them charge back the item. If that doesn't work, call your financial institution and tell them that you need to have them charge back the item. It is not functioning like it should. You should be able to get your money back no problem.
