Church's Anti-Halloween Flier Upsets Family
IBS ^ | October 20, 2005 | Staff

An Ellettsville family whose home is decorated for Halloween contacted police after someone placed on its porch a flier that suggests Halloween praises the devil.

Dalene Gully told Indianapolis television station WRTV that she took offense to the flier, which was placed outside her home by the House of Prayer Church of Bloomington.

"I started reading it, and I was very, very upset by it. I found it very accusatory and very threatening," Gully said.

The church's pastor, Larry Mitchell, said the people who left the flier would have preferred to talk with Gully, but she wasn't there.

Mitchell said the church didn't intend to upset the Gully family, but rather tell people that Halloween isn't harmless fun.

"Halloween is not fantasy," Mitchell said. "We're training up our children, and obviously this lady was trained up in this. Halloween seems like it is taking just as much prominence as Christmas."

The Gully family filed a complaint with the Ellettsville Police Department. The incident also prompted the family to install an alarm system at the home, the station reported.

"This is my home, and I like Halloween. If I want to decorate my home, I have every right to decorate my home," Gully said.

Yeah,
I have 'trigger' issues with them,
so I avoid them like the plague.

Seriously, whomever invented them has a nice toasty spot waiting for them in hell.

But I also think the content of the flyer gives more reason for aggressive reaction than most.

Where did you see the content?

I think so, but in a really deep and scratchy voice.

She may have overreacted, but on the other hand the church may have a reputation in the neighborhood, based on prior behavior. Perhaps when they arrive to find children playing in the yard, they have been known to start in with opposite-of-what-your-parents-taught-you anti-Halloween preaching. If I heard from another parent that that had happened, and then the same outfit starts leaving tracts on my porch, I'd be more annoyed than I would be at some generic Kerry/Edwards flyer.

Anyone, Christian or pagan, who can confuse the great American costume party on October 31 in which children dress up in mockery of the powers of evil (and just about anything else these days) with a pagan or demonic rite is sorely deluded.
There are people who think children should not pretend or even read fairy tales too.
My favorite was going to the front porch of a house one Halloween. Instead of just shutting off their porch light they felt they needed to leave a note stating they were Christian so did not celebrate Halloween. Because all of those who take their children out trick or treating are so obviously not Christian .

How many ways does it take, to actually be correct?

Dress up like a vampire, werewolf, ghost, devil or witch and you are worshipping Satan.

Dress up like an Indian and you are making a mockery of Native Americans.

What is it if you put on a Darth Vader costume with a war bonnet?

go to post #122 for your answer. Also, I stand corrected on the burning human fat in a pumpkin. It was actually burned from a lantern.

I think you may one to something. They may be a cult like church that masquerades as a Christian church, and known to harass.

Just because a church labels itself as a Christian doesn't mean they aren't really just another cult with a freakish and controlling preacher. There are plenty like that around where I leave in Texas.

Sure. Was a fertility/marriage ritual - whoever managed to catch the apple (a long-time symbol of fertility) with his/her teeth would be married within the year. The tub of water (optional) may have some connection with "scrying" or seeing the future in a reflective surface such as a mirror or pool.

One tried-and-true technique is for a couple who are an "item" to approach the apple from opposite sides and catch it between them. Works every time. :-D

Other related customs involve "bobbing" for an apple suspended on a string rather than floating in a tub of water, or managing to peel an entire apple in one long strip, then throwing the peel over your left shoulder while reciting a certain rhyme. The peel is supposed to form the initial of your true love's name.

I think some folks get a little too exercised over these old customs and superstitions. England is absolutely chock full of them . . . there is an entire book devoted to them. The Customs and Ceremonies of Britain by Charles Kightly. It's a great and entertaining book -- one important thing he points out is that EVERY doggone silly custom and pastime in Britain is asserted by its supporters to have "pagan origins", while most of them really don't and can be traced no earlier than the 18th or 19th centuries, when all that stuff became fashionable.

So I think the folks at the church are wasting their time attacking the secular customs of Hallowe'en, and this silly woman is wasting HER time getting so upset about it. When I get collared by an overzealous religionist, I smile and respond politely. Drives 'em nuts!

bah. there are so many more FUN ways to deal with it. its so much more fun to come out with a cigar hanging out my mouth, beer in hand, tattoos and piercings showing, some offensive shirt on, and explain to them that they're not equipped to witness. they have their 1 or 2 select verses, usually written down, and from there they don't know what to say, usually coming back to their small selection of verses.
questioning them usually shows that they are quite ignorant of the religion that they preach.. at least around here. i end up telling them to go study, then come back to me before going out again. so far, only one was serious enough to do just that.

"The incident also prompted the family to install an alarm system at the home, the station reported."

The flier was left on the porch not the kitchen table

----I had to laugh at your comment. Your right, but it was still funny the way you said it.

In earlier times the Druids would force non-pagans to stick their head in a boilng pot of oil and make them pull out an apple in order for them to be spared. Miserable being spared and having a mangled face to live with.

You are what you do.

And since you sin every day, just like everyone else, does that not make you.... a SINNER??? gasp

Stop judging people. Let Christ's GRACE work in people's lives, then attitudes will change. Blind "repentance" preaching does nothing.

Wow, those poor kids' heads must have been seriously messed up. I hope they got sent to live with saner relatives, or a decent foster home after that episode.
