I'm being perfectly honest with both myself and you. What has stuck in your craw are the unfair attacks, but they constitute a small minority of the opposition. You do yourself and us a disservice by dismissing the principled opposition on the basis of arguments we would not make. This isn't a Soviet here where dissenters can be silenced and crushed to make sure they're "on message".

"And now all the Miers haters are gearing up to do the same to the next person the President nominates."

The conservatives aren't.
They're praying to God Bush puts up a clear, known strict constructionist judge, in the mode of Scalia and Thomas.
Then they will close ranks and fight to the death, and the GOP will be saved.

If Bush tries another stealth candidate, or anyone but a known, proven strict constructionist conservative, there will be a civil war in the Republican ranks and it will be the end of the coalition.

He's got no maneuvering room here.
If he does the right thing, the movement will come back together at warp speed: nobody on the right wanted this fight. There will be a battle royale in the Senate, which conservatives will win if the nominee is good and the movement sticks together, fights for it, and disciplines Republicans who step out of line.

Check out Harry Reid's comments since the withdrawl of Miers , and you will see that he was merely playing the ol' Brer' Rabbit into the briar patch ploy. Harry Reid played you and your ilk for fools and you praise him for it.

P.T. Barnum knew what he was talking about.

No, you didn't. You gave no proof. I have proof-- an attorney friend of Priscilla Owen heard about this Rove-created campaign and asked her if it was true, and Owen said she "most emphatically" did not tell Bush not to nominate her.

>> I don't know if any conservative said she wasn't entitled to an up or down vote, but conservatives were running ads against her BEFORE they even had hearings. <<

Ann Coulter was vicious and unfair in her treatment of Roberts and Miers. But one thingI do agree with her was this (paraphrased from memory):

We don't need hearings to tell us that Harriet Miers is not a polar bear, and we don't need hearings to tell us she is unqualified.

Miers' public record speaks for itself. Her defenders felt free to accuse her detractors of sexism, extremism, and every other nasty "ism" in the book. President Bush disgraced himself when he had his wife attack conservatives on the air. So if they feel so free in defending her by vicious assault on Republicans and conservatives, what were they possibly going to do during the hearings? They obviously weren't waiting for a dignified, reasoned response. If they were already fragging their own troops, couldn't they have offered a reasonable defense, too?

"Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day."

If people opposed Roberts like they did Miers, would he be the chief justice today? No. Second, Roberts was qualified and only his judicial philosophy questionable. Miers lacked BOTH. But anyway...

"You'd be surprised at the supposed Bush-lovers' low regard for the man they love. I've heard the meme that Bush plans to appoint the worst possible person post-Miers, out of spite, for weeks-- by pro-Miers folks trying to shout down anti-Miers folks. It's crazy."

I know I've read many of those posts, my reason for responding to that comment. It is sheer insanity.

I believe President Bush does have some vindictive tendencies. But for a decision of such magnitude, I think he has character enough to overcome such a tendency.

If I didn't see him as a man of that kind of character, I couldn't have so strongly supported his two-time bid for the presidency.

Personally, I believe the argument made by the pro-Miers folks, that a Miers withdraw will only a gain a more Liberal nominee, were scare tactics made to SHUT UP the ant-Miers conservatives either consciously or unconsciously.

How about the fact that she is a human being....that kind of respect..but she was treated like just so much dog poop on the shoes of people like Ann Coulter, Frum, Kristol...

AND some of the people here on FR.

Besides, the accomplishment?? White House counsel for one...have YOU ever been White House counsel????

Probably not...hmmmmm not qualified, I am sure.

Don't know about up in Tulsa but down here in Cleveland County, we have problems with one of those late coming to be Republican types.

"You bet. They showed their power. Now Bush has been completely undermined for the rest of his term. Thanks guys."

Not if he names an acceptable candidate he won't be!
The conservative right is ACHING to come back together, at warp speed, and direct all of this anger and frustration outward at Democrats.
If Bush picks a good, strong, conservative candidate, a known quantity, the movement will welcome home the prodigal son with open arms, form ranks around him, and fight to the death for this nominee, and everyone will privately heave a great sigh of relief.

If Bush is petulant and names another unacceptable candidate, THEN it's really over.

Reagan signed a pro-abortion bill as California governor as a Republican.

So, is your denigration of Reagan, using liberal talking points (as you were doing on another thread) and cherry picking events from his career like some sort of hobby or is it just a unique wrinkle you thought up in an effort to prop up the sagging fortunes of Harriet Miers?

Because, uh, dude? Fights over. Harriet pulled her name out of consideration. You can, you know, quit beefing on Ronald Reagan's political legacy in this, uh, conservative forum.

I understand his 11th commandment. However, there comes a time when you have to put your principles ahead of the party when the party loses its way.

JRB has apparently said she DID NOT take herself out of consideration and is ticked over the lie that was 'leaked' to that effect.

Link?
I always viewed Harriet.M's nomination as a stalking horse.

Oh boy that's a toughie.

I hear from another source it was NRO.
NRO had publicly declared a bork Harriet.M, so the source is questionable.

I will "third" that. LOL

When I tried to remind everyone of Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment I was blasted by the anti-Miers crowd. I guess it didn't apply, though I am sure Ronnie was spinning in his grave.
