Oh, I don't underestimate it. It is a serious concern.
As to the borders, that issue was blown all to hell. Most of the country does not care and the rest of us cannot come to a compromise, so nothing will be done.
Vets are not perfect.
But now, think again about Kerry.
Suppose that he really had earned those Purple Hearts, etc.
(Remember that it was VETS wot brought him down on his war record).
But for the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, Kerry would have probably won, because the war hero icon was compelling to enough people.
Beyond that, MOST Vets were not jerks who came home and started calling their comrades war criminals. There are plenty of Vets in Congress. Imagine, for a minute that folks like Zell Miller, Max Clellan, John Glenn, yes, John McCain, and many others didn't have to fit that "Democrat" or "Republican" suit, but could instead run on national security, secure borders, tax and social programs that primarily benefit the Middle Class (as opposed to the underclass or the wealthy class), and could simply say: if you want religion, go to CHURCH. And leave candidates to vote their conscience and constituencies on certain social issues. This would be a very potent combination. You'd cleave away a lot of the best talent from both parties.
Anyway, it's just a thought.
Veterans all have something in common. They recognize each other. They served. They all took an oath to the Constitution young and all lived under a system of discipline and law. They are trained to form teams and accomplish the mission. I'd expect that the "collective action problem" organizing a bunch of Veterans would be lower than with any other large group of people.
Of course, if the President actually nominates a solid conservative, the conservative coalition will fly back together and there will be less pressing need for an alternative. But we're not there yet.

Nope......She was the presidents pick. I don't really know a damn thing about her and only a bit more about Roberts, since he actually had a hearing.
The process was screwed and there will be a price for that. It was a big mistake to not allow her a day or two to explain herself.
You will see a very small pie to pick from now. Bush may have to wait a while.
In the mean time, much of the country has had a look at Conservative governance, and they are no longer confortable with it.
That is the price. she should have had her day, and that is all that was important, whether she did well, or lost.

We don't need Snow, Collins or Chafee to vote our way. Let them vote against the nuke option and the nominee if need be with our blessing. We only need two or three out of Dewine, McCain, Warner, and Graham. And we only need them for the nuke option.
I'll take my chances with Nelson (NE) Pryor (AR) and even Byrd (WV) on the floor (not the nuke) vote.
If they vote against a conservative judge they can kiss their senate seats good bye.

Bush thought he could be clever and short-circuit the process by offering a candidate whose only documents were privileged to the President. Blame Bush for that decision, not the people who rightly protested it out.

Bush should have never picked her. I think the cost would have been much higher if Miers would have been grilled in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Don't buy this whining about the 'unfair attacks.' They were few and far between, and that's now the party line of the party hacks to explain why their stealth nominee crashed and burned in the face of a united conservative call for a clearly qualified clearly constitutionalist nominee. But where the unfair attacks came from in this debate, contrary to these silly claims that she was 'miered,' were the sexist-elitist-insult lines of the Miers partisans. To hear them tell it now, that was just friendly banter, while using Miers' own words against her and pointing out her sparse record and credentials, that was a 'vicious attack.'
The RINOs here lost their last chance to keep the court RINO, and now they need to fall in with the conservative nominee. What they're doing instead is lining up to trash any conservative nominee with the Rats, and hoping they'll be able to wait out the right by trashing until they get another stealth lib. It's worked before, but it won't work this time. Too many of us are watching, we're mad as hell, and we're not going to take it any more.
