A Separate Peace. America is in trouble--and our elites are merely resigned.

I think Peggy's being overly gloomy. People have been forecasting the end of the world for over a thousand years. But fanatical islam is an insidious enemy and the liberals in this country have no idea what it's like to fight for anything.

My sense is of something real, an invasion that has already occurred via immigration, legal and illegal, where assimilation is no longer required but disparaged. This comes under the general heading of Political Correctness, which has blurred distinctions between right and wrong, patriotic and unpatriotic, truth and lie, left and right and just plain common sense. To sum it up, we have lost a sense of SHARED VALUES, as part of a NATIONAL IDENTITY. National sovereignty is no longer a given, in the wake of NAFTA, CAFTA and FTAA, leading to a North American union.

But, hey, maybe I'm wrong!

Peggy's editorial is unfortunately timed, though, since we are at least somewhat back on track with the rescinding of Miers's nomination, a HUGE relief.

Rights not specifically delegated by the Constitution to FedGov are reserved to the States, or the People.

POWERS not specifically delegated by the Constitution to FedGov are reserved to the States, or the People.

There is a difference.

I could not agree more, with you and this article. The natives are restless.

Communism is defeated, Osama is reduced to making propaganda videos, Saddam is in jail, and democracy is emerging in the Arab Middle East.

Life is great.

Peggy needs to spend more time around business people. Even NY Times columnists turn optimistic. Most business people wake up each day thinking about how to make more money, better products, win more customers, beat the pants off the competition, hire someone smart, restructure for the future, etc. That's a positive, proactive stance towards the world.

Most Washingtonians sit around figuring out howt to look smart, or raise money for re-election, or posture on some issue. And mostly how to avoid getting egg on the face. It's a weird little world she's spent most of her life in and it leads to weird navel-gazing columns like this , I think.

imho we are simultaneously well on the way to a political crackup domestically and internationally while at the same time within sight of the new technology singularity that could abolish scarcity and make most current problems obsolete.

Which will happen first is anyone's guess.

Where I agree with Peggy is that the elites are totally clueless.

I just expect civil war. Some constitional issue, or some crisis will escalate fast, and whop! One week, we're Yugoslavia, the next week we're Serbs vs. Croats. The MSM has already declared war. Just a matter of time before other segments join in.

Or maybe not.

We [the USA, that is] are on a track of confrontation with the world. The first half of the last century we were at war in Europe, the second half we were at war in Asia, now in this century we start out with war in the Arab lands. We pretty much stand alone now with England and Israel.

We have cleared the world battlefield using conventional weapons of our choice. Others challenge us now using weapons of their choice [we call terrorism] for which we have no current answer other than nuke them all.

We are counting on the 'information/consumer society' as the economic engine to replace the smoke stack factory production engine.

Politicans of both parties accuse the other of being corrupt and under special interest control, unfortunately they are both right.

Throw in gated communities, drug use, gross language, abortion and marriage dissolution, diminished reproduction, frivolous law suits, job uncertainities, rising health care and education costs.

Now why should people, who can't document with tables, be concerned about the future?

Most all of the things I read here, so far seem plausible. It could be any, all or most of them. The reason, I think, is that for years a segment of this society has laid blame for all the world's ills on America. We're guilty, guilty, guilty. I think this has become a part of the American psyche. And guilt demands punishment. Of course, not all Americans buy into this. But I think too many have, even subconsciously.

Sorry, but I can't agree with anything, because the media COMMONLY speaks of what they THINK they see, without seeing a damn thing, just look at Chris Matthews and his Rove Libby indictment countdown. I SEE that he see's nothing, but thinks he see's much more, and I am tired of him talking about what he thinks he sees without seeing anything.

that particular symantic excercise over, lets move to the second paragraph where the author does exactly what I just did, only didn't say anything or create a comparisson.

This looks like a pathetic first year philosophy major spouting nothing and making it look like something in the perfect emmulation of Dehrida, or derhida, or deridha or whatever that know nothing "philosopher" is named.

The feelings P.N. raise are what I feel in my gut. Kinda like being high up on a wobbly ladder not knowing if the next step will cause me to go crashing down. It is with American optimism and faith that a lot of us get up each morning and try to make a better life for our families. I guess in the final analysis that's what motivates me. Once you read the article you find most of us are still on the ship, but the cautious sailor's will have their life jacket on.

I focused on the first two paragraphs cuz they summed up the rest of the virtually inarticulate, convoluted, and disjointed article.

Pardon my inability to support an opinion incapable of being formed without first destroying the idea of opinion.

2. The left and the media are all for it.

Somehow Ms. Noonan seems to have missed this even mentioning Teddy Kennedy and his comment. Why the hell wouldn't he know what's going to happen when he and his ilk are behind ALL of it and have been for years and years? No country can survive when nearly half the country are gleefully planning its downfall or being duped into not taking notice that that is the path down which they are being led.

We have drifted so far from Constitutional government that at some point we will collapse under the weight of the corrupt welfare state.

Bad things are going to happen because government has gotten too big and took responsibility for things it was never intended to be responsible for. Things like Social Security, welfare, Medicaid, bankruptcy protection, education, foreign aid, global policing, disaster relief, etc., should not be governments’ responsibility.

The purpose of government is to protect its territory, its infrastructure and its citizens and uphold the law...THAT’S IT...not take on responsibilities which traditionally have the family's domain. By taking those responsibilities away from the family it has weakened family bonds, diluted personal responsibility and fostered a careless and apathetic citizenry not suited to governing themselves.

"The wierd thing is that there isn't a single concensus as to what that bad thing is."

I agree. I've had this sick/pessimistic feeling for awhile and I can't really point to any one thing that stands out as a cause. The fact that things just keep on rolling despite what I see as the encroaching chaos allays my fears but even then I think I'm just kidding myself or hoping my feelings are wrong. Problem is, I'm usually fairly accurate in sensing these things.
