Death of net game addicts alert others (World of Warcraft fanatics hold virtual funeral)

BEIJING, Nov. 1 -- The recent deaths of two net gamers have once again raised the issue of the impact of addiction on the online gaming community, and the health risks involved.

A young girl nicknamed "Snowly" died last month after playing the online game "World of Warcraft" for several continuous days during the national day holiday. Snowly's friends, who share the same game community, say that Snowly was a very diligent member and a key official of their community, who was always connected to the Internet.

Several days before Snowly's death, the girl was said to be preparing for a relatively difficult part of the game and had very little rest. She told her friends that she felt very tired.

A big online funeral was held for Snowly one week after her death. But the event was sadly overshadowed by the death of another game enthusiast nicknamed "Nan Ren Gu Shi".

Thereafter, several online game communities have posted announcements to urge their members to pay attention to their heath.

Meanwhile 7 major domestic game makers have agreed to install an anti-obsession system on eleven online game products. The system entered a trial period on October 20.

I have an "anti-obsession" system for video games. It's called a wife.

Geez, I can't play anything more than two hours without having to get up and walk around. Including WoW.

Lack of parental supervision. Very sad :(

Same here. Although when I was on the road a lot, I could see myself doing something like this.

Tell me about it. My Descent 3 CD got the old heave ho.

Wive's just don't understand the primal need to send a Mega Missle up the old tail pipe. (I'm talking about the game of course.)

during the national day holiday.

Er.. what?

You are going to have to be a bit more vague.

It is amazing how quickly time passes when you're playing an immersive game. You think you've been playing for 1 hour - then you get up and are all stiff and you realize it's been 5 hours!

This only happens when the nag-o-tronic is away shopping though.

I play Horde on Feathermoon. And I'll avoid inserting inappropriate "Chinese gold farmer" remarks here...our server is bloody overrun with them. Almost as many of them as there are night elves. OK, not really...

I'm still working on my undead warrior on Feathermoon and I have to say part of the fun of going to Orgrimmar is hearing the occasional engrish request for a raid invite.

I've played Diablo II for extended periods before. I agree, it's very easy to lose sight of the time when you're involved in the game. But I just can't see sitting and playing for days at a time and being so totally obsessed with a game that you can't or won't sleep and take care of yourself.

This situation is like the one with Amerindians and alcohol. Most of these addicts and the ones who play themselves to death are all Asian, esp Chinese and Koreans. Hmmm...

Anybody here play Guild Wars? I was thinking of getting it for me and my 11 year old son. Right now we play Runescape. WOW at $15.00 per month is too much for my wallet.

LOL . . I have NO idea. Lack of sleep? Being flogged by your chinese farmer slave master?

Seriously though -- my bet is lack of sleep. Exhaustion, bad nutrition. . . something along those lines? Throw dehydration in there too?

I'm on Earthen Ring :) 60 dr00d!

I dunno, maybe I'm old fashioned, but I hope when I die, I am known and remembered by my given name...
