Proposition 2 Wins Approval
Houston Chronicle ^ | November 7, 2005 | AP

A state constitutional ban on same-sex marriage championed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry and social conservatives won overwhelming voter approval today as Texans decided nine proposed amendments.

With 472,553 votes counted, 74 percent favored the ban while 26 percent were against it.

Same-sex marriage already is prohibited under Texas law. Those who supported Proposition 2 said a constitutional ban was needed to ensure a judge doesn't decide to allow gays to marry.

Supporters and opponents the gay marriage ban battled aggressively for weeks, holding debates, dueling news conferences and sending out campaign messages through the Internet and airwaves.

Opponents argued a constitutional ban was unnecessary and merely a statement of discrimination against homosexuals. They also suggested that the proposed amendment was so poorly drafted it could endanger common-law or traditional male-female marriages, depending on how a judge interpreted it.

Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, sponsor of the legislation leading to Prop 2, said opponents resorted to scare tactics.

The pro-Prop 2 organization Texans for Marriage lined up numerous ministers on its side and often cited the Bible as a reason to pass the amendment and protect traditional marriage between a man and a woman.

No Nonsense in November, an anti-Prop 2 group led by openly gay former legislator Glen Maxey, boasted that it was making a "horse race" out of the campaign, in part because no other major people or issues were on the Texas ballot. The group worked to generate heavy turnout in Austin, considered to be its stronghold.

76% is a landslide in anyone's book but now the great equalizer's in the Judiciary will circumvent the will of the People.

Not in Texas. Every judge in Texas is elected, and every single judge at the statewide appellate level and Texas Supreme Court is a Republican.

Tossing my hat in the air, and may I also add, shaking my tail feathers?

(LOL)

It will be interesting to see the final figures.

I KNEW Texans wouldn't let us down! One of my best old friends is a Texan, and although everyone in Texas obviously isn't a clone, he's as conervative as they come, AND a highly unique individual.

California, Take notice...

Why? That's where we try to send all of our queers! That or Faggsachussetts. We tell 'em they'll be soooo much happier there than in good 'ol intolerant bigoted Texas. Of course, we do have some fundamentalists around here who seem more concerned about their long-term destinations (whether they want to hear about it or not).

1,3, and 9 are too close to call, with less than 25% reporting.

I think its high time to have a national referendum to amend the U S constitution to ban perverted marriage.

The issue will be decided one way or the other, by the will of the people or by the black robed oligarchy. They struck down the Texas Sodomy laws, What's to prevent them from throwing the Texas constitution in to the trash bin?

In White Settlement, a suburb of Fort Worth, voters rejected a proposal to change the town's name to West Settlement. Some citizens said the name taken in the 1800s for the city's white pioneers was politically incorrect and hindered economic development, but others believed the city should hang on to its heritage.

"Hysterical, the Left actually thought they could run neck and neck on this in Tejas.... WOW, they are delusional."

Reminds me of when the same happened in Missouri a couple of years ago. The measure prevailed by the same amount.

The homo crowd, instead of realizing that, fundamentally, Americans don't want their sexual predilections on a level with normal relations, mused that they hadn't advertised enough, didn't raise enough money, and put out a confused message.

It really makes me laugh. I hope the left stays delusional about this forever.

It only became a problem to those who despise whites. It was a racist attack against the city, no different than the attacks by the ACLU on the Christian cross being displayed on the seal in California.

The Dems must have been really despirate as they were stealing every Yes on Prop. 2 yard sign put out. Too bad no one caught them stealing the signs and photographed them grabbing the sign. It would be funny to publicize the photo so all of their straight friends could have some fun ribbing them about being a "homo." ;)
