RICHMOND -- President Bush's sinking popularity helped seal Democrat Timothy M. Kaine's victory in Virginia's gubernatorial election Tuesday, politicians and pollsters said yesterday. "We know that George Bush is just killing us," said Delegate David B. Albo, a Republican who narrowly defeated his Democratic challenger in Fairfax County. "His popularity just brought the ticket down. There's no other way to explain it."
Mr. Kaine, the current lieutenant governor, defeated Republican Jerry W. Kilgore by six percentage points in a contest that had been a statistical dead heat in the days before the election.

You know, even without cheating, it is very possible to win by six percentage points after some poll said you were tied.
There is the margin of error to consider, and the poll could have been off.
Also, there was a break towards Caine near the end from independents/undecideds. Those people seemed to buy Caine as the moderate to conservative on various issues that he portrayed himself to be, and they liked him and his campaign, apparently, more than Kilgore and his campaign. These are just facts.
I have read where this VA Governor's race ended with virtually the same GOP-Dem percentages as the last one did when the President's popularity was sky high after 9-11.
Virginians are almost predictable in their patterns of voting in such races. I don't agree with them but there it is...
NJ was a foregone conclusion... VA was up for grabs. Bad campaigning by Kilgore or not... this is one you want to win.
Good point...let's put this in a reverse situation. IF this statistical dead heat race had resulted in the Republican winning, what would the media be focusing on? They would not PRAISE Bush for his influence, the Dems would be crying election fraud and the press would run with the story from THAT perspective!.
Four things:
1) Wasn't the President's personal involvement limited to the final 24 hours or so of the campaign?
2) Isn't Presidential involvement in a local campaign usually the result of a specific request from the candidate?
3) I don't remember hearing/reading anything to the effect that the President's assistance was not wanted.
4) The candidate approves/disapproves of campaign strategy, in this case a conscious decision was made to align himself with the President.
On the surface it would appear that the candidate refuses to accept responsibility for his own decisions. Not exactly a desirable leadership trait.
He is trying to convince voters that he is personally more popular than the election results would indicate. Of course, he is dumping on the President to make himself look good. One helluva nice guy, don't you think?
No one on this thread has yet done that. Most are simply saying that the responsibility for Kilgore's loss lays with Kilgore himself. Why not wait until after the offense occurs to start slinging names?
To a degree some Conservatives were misled into thinking Mark was one of them ~ after all, the government that governs least governs best, and Mark didn't govern at all!
But don't trust Mark, or the new guy, Kaine and their buddies. They had the odious Leslie Byrne on the ticket this time and she and her husband hang around with the wifebeating, alcoholic, child molesting Congressman Jim Moran. We can never forget Jim solicits and keeps campaign donations from AlQaida members and syncophants.
These people do not mean us well and are a danger to the republic.

Well. I didn't see this sentiment in any of the 2000 pieces of campaign literature stuck to my door, in my mailbox, etc.
Why would he say such a thing? Maybe I 'misvoted' on this fellow.
They're usually more positive toward President Bush....not negative.
It would have been more appropriate to remind people of the short link between Kaine and Osama Bin Laden.
Um, they've only had complete control of it for 6 years after 120 years of 'Rat control. Start to complain about a long time around 2100.

Nope. Both he and Kaine said it would be spent on NoVA transportation projects. I'll believe it when I see it.

Have a link for that? I thought my disliking for him was a minority position. According to polls I have seen, he sits in the 70% positive range.
I do like a government that governs least, or a government that doesn't pass a bill, law, or tax. Makes me happy.

I wholeheartedly agree. Kilgores cartoon ads (Kaine sitting at a table gobbling everything up) were childish and insulting toward the electorate (as were Byrne's bobblehead Bolling ads, I'm glad she lost). While Kilgore was right in pointing out Kaines death penalty views, the Hilter ads were over the top. Kaine turned them around and almost made it look like he was being persecuted for his religion (although his "faith" didn't stop him from being pro-abortion, pro-partial birth abortion, and anti-parental notification).
That's what I thought... and that's what I believe the article is pointing to.
If I were Kilgore... I would've wanted Bush by my side as often as I could get him. Hell... he's right up the road! I basically think the GOP just pissed this one away.
But there are those who want to blame Bush so they might as well get in line with the rest of the bashers.
