As a military officer I have seen the quality of recruits go down with the decline of our society.

I believe it.

It used to be a career, now it's simply a way to make some short term money & get a college degree. It used to be patriotic (and still is to some), now it's something those "idiots" in fly over country sign up for. The rednecks who just want to shoot guns...

The Dems/media have done a good job of stigmatizing the military.

Another thought:
What if after 2 years on unemployment you can't find a job...
Tell the unemployed if they want to stay on the government dole - they need to WORK for it - ie military ;)

Already happened, Rangel's bill failed something like 401-3. The only 3 yes votes were Dems.

Every state should have universal conscription.

I'm not going to disagree with you, but your enlisted have to be better than we had when the AVF started in the mid-70s.

I was in from 76-84, and we worked damn hard to make it work, and get rid of the unfit soldiers.

One thing that isn't broken is our all volunteer force. Returning to the draft would be a major mistake.

The DUmocrats have dangled the draft bait but so far only the other DUmmies are biting. Set the hook, play em easy.

I'm sure you know they never really supported bringing back the draft. They floated that sound bite to alarm the draft-age voters and swing them to vote Democrat. All they'd hear is the proposition. They wouldn't make the association of who was proposing it and would assume it was the Bush administration.

the 'Rats are so transparent they would be funny if they weren't so despicable!

Rangel wouldn't know a fact if he choked on one.

They want President Bush to make some type of comment on possible draft and run with it.

Bush should dismantle the draft registration system and end this nonsense once and for all.

Doing a little research on the Draft and came across your post. Nobody has ever been drafted into the Navy so you don't need to worry. The Draft will supply the Army and perhaps the Marine Corps (2% in Korea, 12% in Vietnam) with MOS's that are quickly trained. We won't see a real Draft until we see a real war.

I think that the Dems should propose such a bill, publicize it, and drum up all the public support it deserves, as soon as possible. I think this should be their one banner proposal for the upcoming elections in November - I think they should bet their party's entire success in 2006 on re-enacting the draft.

I'd pay money to see it. They'd get about 12 votes. Nationwide.
