CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Authorities say an illegal immigrant was intoxicated Friday morning when his vehicle slammed into two others on Interstate 485.

Jorge Hernandez, 35, is accused of driving more than 100 mph on the wrong side of the highway. His Ford Expedition collided head on with another vehicle, police said.

"The crash last night was a severe impact," said Trooper Brian Huffstickler of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. "It was probably one of the worst crashes we've ever seen."

The driver of the other vehicle, 18-year-old Min Soon Chang, was killed. Hernandez was injured, as was Tasha Beth Thomas, who was driving a vehicle that the Expedition sideswiped after the head-on collision.

Hernandez is charged with driving while impaired, and other charges are pending. Authorities are still trying to find out whether he has a prior record.

"Whenever you're here illegally, it's very hard for us to maintain contact with the person after they're charged," Huffstickler said.

Chang was a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

"My family is just destroyed right now," said Amos Chang, Min's brother. "They're just sad, depressed. They were in denial, but they can start to accept that my brother has passed on."

Amos Chang said his own anger was intensified because Hernandez walked away from the crash that his brother could not.

Elizabeth Cho, a family friend, said Min was a caring person.

"I kind of saw him grow up. He always looked out for other people and showed concern for other people," Cho said. "My husband and I were just saying how sad it is to lose such a nice, young kid because he can do so many things in our future in this world."

U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., is working on legislation that would strengthen penalties against illegal immigrants who are convicted of DWI. She became vocal about the issue when Scott Gardner, a Gaston County teacher, was killed in July by an illegal immigrant who was driving drunk.

On Friday, she commented on "another bright young life lost."

"I hope that this -- as far as our committees are concerned -- will make a difference," Myrick said. "This is just another example of why we need the legislation."

Police said that Hernandez was driving for almost 20 miles on the wrong side of I-485.

That's why they have things called "jails". Too bad we don't use them.

I seems like an illegal alien Mexican killed a Chinese who may or may not be here legally. It used to be just whites and blacks and American Indians lived in North Carolina. Now you have Mexicans killing Chinese

If I do an illegal an injustice then maybe as a person who must follow our laws I should have to face a that, but the illegal should get nothing. That would take suing an American off the table.

How about tripling the usual punishment for illegal aliens convicted of crimes

I don't really have the answers, either. :)
But I do know that having two sets of laws, or (!) having one and some hybrid international law that applies here is simply impractical.

So what do you propose should be done with the driver of the Explorer? Should he be shot on sight?

Great idea! He murdered someone. When you drive drunk at 100mph it's a certainty you'll kill, maim, cripple for life

Shoot on sight is better than most of your immigration ideas

How about the Chinese guy? Should we shoot him too? He's got a funny name.

Is this guy in jail, or did they release him?

So ... ¿whatcha gonna do about it, Jorge?

Well, it's kind of a secret. But if I tell you, will you promise not to laugh or start using the word "amnesty". "Amnesty" is a very very bad word and could never be applied by decent Americans to anything I might do about the sufferings of our undocumented American neigbors.

The illegal alien Mexican murderer needs to be executed then deported. This would be true justice. Driving drunk at 100mph, if he hadn't killed the Chinese guy he would have killed someone else, maybe family of four

But hey, you and GWBush and the country clubbers got your imported class of drunken serfs so what do you care?

The problem here is that you are confusing my answers of suing and other rights. Early in this discussion I answered someone post about MD illegal's filing a lawsuit about our ID restrictions.

Convict this guy the same as you would any other drunk driver, but he should not have the right to sue us if he is done wrong by the system. A redo may be in order, but take suing off the table.
In addition he should not be set free until that time; nor should any other illegal because we won't find them again until they break another law.

Helloo?? What's wrong with this sentence??

Everything! I hope they keep this jerk incarcerated instead of granting bail.

All my servants are legal, although admittedly sometimes I'll take the Aston Martin to Wal-Mart to watch the little people.

Remember, it's "Guest Worker Program". It will cost a few billion dollars a year, but no big deal. We'll just print some more greenbacks and everything will be fine. Now finish your Kool-Aid and get back to work.

LOL!
Jack & Karen take pictures of their Thanksgiving feast and throw it down to the homeless people so they can feel good too.

While many disagree as to whether illegals should be here, I'd think that most would or should agree that illegals who commit crimes definitely should not be here.

Every illegal arrested for any crime should not be granted bail due to their flight risk. They should remain incarcerated, do time for the crime and then be sent home. If we're not going to have real interior enforcement, they could at least deal with the aliens who commit crimes.

How does an illegal alien afford a Ford Expedition?

I was wondering the same thing.

I totally agree!

Plus why not make a separate holding place for them? They should they get the same things in our jails as a citizen would have?
I say:
we feed them, make them work for it.
we keep them somewhat safe from the others and make them work for it.
we give them a few things extra that they work for and that's that.

If we catch a person 2 or more times they go to another separate prison for LIFE!
