Bruno: Pirro should quit anti-Clinton race By MARC HUMBERT AP Political Writer November 29, 2005, 12:44 PM EST ALBANY, N.Y. -- The most powerful Republican in the state Legislature called Tuesday for Jeanine Pirro to give up her quest to unseat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2006 and run instead for state attorney general. State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said the Westchester County district attorney could win the attorney general's race while in running for Senate, "she's going to have one of the most competitive races in the state." Independent polls have shown the former first lady well ahead of Pirro. "I hope that before this procedure gets too much further along that Jeanine Pirro would reconsider and run for AG.," Bruno told a state Capitol news conference. There was no immediate comment from Pirro. Bruno said he has not talked to Pirro about his feelings for a month or more, but had made those sentiments known to her repeatedly in earlier conversations. The Senate leader said he was also talking up the idea with Republican Gov. George Pataki and other GOP leaders. "All I am saying is while she may make a great U.S. senator, she would be of greater service to a state (GOP) ticket to be on as attorney general," said Bruno.p>

He ran too little too late. I think that being an emergency fill-in after Rudy dropped out didn't help much either.
The thing that struck me about his campaign, above all else, was how much more competent the volunteers seemed to be, in contrast to the paid staff.
Either that, or the Lazio campaign was simply filled with chronic f-ups and we looked good by way of comparison.
Perhaps a combination of both.
Upstate needs its own state. Then RINOs need not apply :)
I would see that the clinton slime won the senate seat....after all didn't the slime thing say that she would run for the senate and fulfill her terms????
I would hold her to it, besides, the only people that thinks she's any good is the people in N.Y.

The Republican party in NY sate is totally disfunctional.
Much of the blame can go to Pataki as he made no provision to develop talent.
there is no republican party left in my home state; let me start at my home base in nassau county which at one time (and not to long ago) was the shining star of the GOP in this state was just embarrassingly and decisively defeated in every county wide seat and unfortunately the conservative party is not any better. the biggest consequence of this is that slowly all the judicial seats are turning into RAT strongholds.
As AG she would be in a prime position for governor after Spitzer or Suozzi. As Senate candidate she will squander $2 million or so and lose.
Hate to say it, but he's right.
Actually, she's made such a fool out of herself up to this point, I'm not sure she'd win either.
My same thought. A quiet call to his office, a key word here and there, and Bruno rolls over. What next? Perhaps her money starts to dry up?

Just got back from a big Weld reception on the St. Regis Roof. Somehow, the state party honchos think having the 62 county chairmen pick the candidates is democracy in action. Weld was pretty impressive, though.
I was just a low-level, part-time volunteer for the Lazio campaign in NYC at the time, but I maintain that Rick Lazio himself (I met him and spoke with him several times) was a very decent "good guy". He had a 66% ACU rating when he left Congress, and probably would've made a fine senator for NY. From what I saw and heard at the various NYC HQs, his campaign was very badly run.
One example: His campaign made a stop in Poughkeepsie, NY in September 2000 for a "rally". Apparently his campaign people (or... somebody) alerted the local politicians at the very last minute that he would be appearing there, and there was no advance notice given to any of the local media about his appearance. He was supposed to give a rousing speech, along with some of these local officials, who were just alerted at the last minute about the event. His giant campaign bus parked in a dilapidated and abandoned part of Poughkeepsie, and he and the other Congresswoman (name escapes me now) gave their speeches. There must've been 10 people in the crowd, and half of us were his volunteers - it was awful. This happened in several other cities around NY - Buffalo in particular - from what I remember hearing from other FReepers and Lazio volunteers. Sad.

Exactly! My husband and I - who volunteered for Rick as often as we could in NYC and in NY state (we live in northern CT) - thought the very same thing. See my post #32.
Yes, she should stop running against Hillary, before she's served a cup of Arkancide with whipped cream on it. You know how the Clintons are. They've been getting rid of people who stand in their way for years now, and I'm sure she would be just another bump in the road for Hillary.
In his defense he had zero support from Pataki & Co. (which now seems to be Pirro's problem) and had so little time to gather the funds needed to go against that DNC fat cat with a huge campaign war chest. Remember he was not well known and had to make up so much lost time and fill mightly large shoes once Rudy pulled out.
Got my first solicitation letter from Pirro yesterday. I'm afraid I won't (can't, actually) be running down to NYC this time to volunteer for her campaign. We'll see how things shape up with Campaign 2006 this summer I guess...

I think Bruno wants nobody to run against Hillary to keep the Dem turnout down.
The congresswoman you alluded to in your earlier post; was that her name by any chance?
Actually, the Lazio-Giuliani campaign outspent Hillary-by a pretty substantial margin, if I recall correctly.
My husband and I overheard Kelley and the other "officials" (don't know who they were) laughing nervously as Rick's bus pulled away "Not bad for a last-minute appearance, I guess." "Did you know he was coming? No? I didn't either... nobody told me." It was SO pathetic...
