PATRIOT FILIBUSTER? [Byron York]
Senate sources tell NRO they expect a filibuster within the hour on the reauthorization of the Patriot Act. Republican leaders tell NRO they do not believe they have the votes to overcome a filibuster. They believe nearly all of the Senates 45 Democrats will support the filibuster, joined by some Republicans -- Senate sources believe GOP senators Larry Craig, John Sununu, and Chuck Hagel may be among those joining the Democrats. GOP leaders are not sure what their next move will be. There is talk of extending the life of the Patriot Act for three months beyond its Dec. 31 sunset date. One GOP source joked, "If you really want an extension, how about a ten-month extension. Well vote on it October 15, 2006."
Sen Gregg up talking about the Dems wantingto mute the NH Primary
Heheheh. The administration had offered more than one reason to be opposed to the McCain interrogation and degrading treatment amendments. I recall one statement that the amendments duplicated existing law, and others tha the amendments would unecessarily tie hands.
But it's my sense that objections to some provisions in the Patriot Act are completely unrelated to the McCain amendments.
Kennedy was asking about the timing of the cloture vote, and it sounded as though the vote may be as late as 12:15 or so. At 11:00, 15 minutes to the majority, then one hour to debate cloture.
Carig and Sununu CERTAINLY will, as will Murkowski.

There is more than talk. There is a proposed bill, S.2082, to do exactly that.
If nearly all of the 45 DEMs vote against cloture, there is no doubt the cloture motion will fail.
Protecting the country against foreign aggression, particularly sophisticated international terrorism, is not something "the people" can do. We can't just grab rifles and head for the shore to shoot at the Redcoats these days. We need counterintelligence capability, which requires our government to have the ability to spy.
Naturally, these powers can be abused by corrupt officials or unofficials like former de facto President Hillary Clinton. That's no excuse to leave us with insufficient counteritelligence capabilities.
This is just where we want the dems to be. No more hiding, no more saying one thing and acting differently. Frist will use the constitutional option when it comes to JUDICIAL nominees. But, when it comes to legislative matters, Frist can show me some true leadership by merely making the dems fillibuster bill after bill after bill that comes to the floor of the Senate.
In the Iraqi language .. no means yes???
Good luck!!!
The new language of Meximerica. Already spoken down here in Arizona.
Lott seems steamed...
I can see you are afraid. You must also be very young. I remember sitting in class after one of our innumerable nuclear alert drills held in all the schools in the early 60's. We hid under our desks for a few minutes. Were we terrorized?
People were building bomb shelters in their backyards. Communism was as big a terrorist threat to this nation as Islamic terrorism is today, with the added threat of much wider destruction and death, in numbers that would dwarf the deaths of 100 Twin Tower attacks. We may have been afraid but no one clamored for the Government to ignore the U.S. Constitution or begged for a Patriot Act.
Before you tell me how different things are now then they were then, I will agree...We kept control of our borders back then. Alas, my generation has raised a pliant population of sheep who look upon Big Guv as a benevolent entity. The public schools have done their underhanded deed well.
The proof is in the Orwellian posts on this forum by people like you who are not conservative...except perhaps in a very narrow social vein.
I was listening to Tony Snow and only caught the end. Do you know what happened?
Something about a Katrina bill.

What I meant is that when the people allow the government to gain more power to deal with a crisis, frequently when the crisis is over the government will not relinquish that power. I support the Patriot Act, we definitely need it when we are facing the threats that we are today, but I also realize that it is also domestic weapon if it gets into the wrong hands (like Hillary for instance). Thus I also support "sunsetting" the Act, say, four years or so in the future. If we still need it at that point, then we can re-authorize it (which is what is being debated today).
Delaying a vote to October would make great politics. Have the Democrats vote down the Patriot Act right before the elections!
I think they have something in the hopper to speed up SBA awarding money to local businesses in the Gulf.
The Patriot Act is less of a threat than Islamacists running around this country able to hide their activities. The Patriot Act only extends the rules to fighting terrorism that we already use for drug dealers.
I wish that sentence didn't make me go weak in the knees. Will be following along on the thread, thanks for posting it.
LOL. Sad, but it did make me laugh.
Oh yes, I did hear about Senator Idiot Hagel joining with the RATS on this one. Nebraska voters...GET RID of this fool!
