"Before you tell me how different things are now then they were then, I will agree.." Please, it is more then obvious you do NOT agree or else you wouldn't have posted as you have. To compare terrorism with Communism indicates to me you have no clue about the threat presented by either.
To: KDD
I can see you are afraid. You must also be very young.Zero-for-Two, pal.
The proof is in the Orwellian posts on this forum by people like you who are not conservative...except perhaps in a very narrow social vein.
Zero-for-two again. You should probably avoid drawing sweeping conclusions about people's beliefs based on one post.
If you don't think we need counterintelligence capability to combat foreign enemies in this country, then all I can say is that your naivete makes me very afraid.
The effective destruction of our intelligence capabilities from the Church Hearings in the 1970's until very recently was a major reason why we have been weak at dealing with the threat of terrorism. The other major reason is a lack of political will to take action when necessary.

I agree with your logic on timing. I would apply the same logic to search-and-seizure practices (what is "reasonable" in one instance might be unreasonable elsewhere or at another time). For example, the pat-downs at NFL Games are total crap and have nothing to do with preventing terrorism.

Leahy up ranting about secret ordersThat answers the question about who would be first to quote the NYT on the floor of the senate today. Oh no, "mend the Patriot Act, don't end it." Blech.

The Patriot Act is less of a threat than Islamacists running around this country able to hide their activities. We didn't need the PA to keep white European communist terrorists from planting a suitcase nuke in one of our cities and the Islamic terrorists are easier to identify then their communist counterparts.
There were several operations ran out of Langley and F.B.I. Headquarters in Washington where domestic spying on Americans were done.. Operation Chaos was only one such. When these operations became public knowledge, the outcry was so furious that laws prohibiting domestic spying were passed.
This was at the height of the cold war. Remember?

Leahy ranting about secrets? The same Leaky Leahy who was booted off the Intelligence Committee for disclosing secret information? The same S.O.B. who blasted Bork for takings consulting money to pay for his dying wife's cancer treatments?
That jackass richly deserved the obscenity Cheney inflicted on him.

The communists were STATE funded. Nuclear deterent kept them from this type of operation, as they knew that Moscow or Belgrade or Warsaw would be targeted should something like that be attempted. Plus the communists, while evil, weren't insane.
We are dealing with an entirely different type of enemy, one which is not under the control of any state, whihch doesn't share any of our values, and which is willing to kill innocents just to prove a point. Apples and oranges, if you ask me.

There is talk of extending the life of the Patriot Act for three months beyond its Dec. 31 sunset date. There is more than talk. There is a proposed bill, S.2082, to do exactly that.
I think President Bush and Frist already said let the Patriot Act expire versus extending it three months and let that be on the head of the Democrats. Let's see, the Democrats have had more than 4 years to discuss their concerns and they wait until the last few months to do it.
Don't think so. All they want to do is make the President look bad and it is backfiring, again. If there is no vote on the Patriot Act the public will see this as a failure caused by the Democrats, not the President.

Operation Chaos wouldn't have been such a big deal if the anti-war group hadn't achieved such ascendancy by the time it was revealed. I see also that much of the trouble was caused by there being two factions in the CIA, much as we have today. I don't think that is a very good example, since by the time it was revealed the public had already gotten stampeded into anti-Nixon hysteria.
