I can swaer that just recently (in the last year) the USO got the likes of Jessica Simpson, Garth Brooks, etc. to do shows for the troops. I think the Guardian has a case of selective amnesia.

It it mostly country stars going to entertain the troops, this article is about Hollywierd! This is from Travis Tritts website, but last year there were more articles about his trips overseas to entertain the troops.

Norman Mineta, US Sectretary of Transportation presented him with the medal before the concert at Vienna Virgina's "Wolf Trap". Earlier in day Travis went to 'Walter Reed Medical Center" and visited with soliders that have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan."
