WASHINGTON - A federal judge Friday loosened the restrictions on John W. Hinckley Jr., allowing the hospitalized presidential assailant to spend seven overnight visits with his parents in Williamsburg, Va.
Hinckley, who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981,
had been permitted to leave St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington for outings around the nation's capital. He wanted to make longer trips and travel outside the area to his parents' community in southeastern Virginia.
U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman ruled Hinckley could be allowed three, three-night visits and another four, four-night visits.
"He is not permitted to leave one or both parents' supervision at any time during the course of the conditional release" except when the hospital deems it necessary, Friedman ruled.
The government had opposed Hinckley's requests to visit Williamsburg, a three-hour drive from the forensic hospital where he has been held since 1982.
When Hinckley shot Reagan and three other people in 1981 as the president emerged from a downtown hotel, he was suffering from major depression and a psychotic disorder that led to an obsession with actress Jodie Foster.
Hinckley, found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982, said he shot Reagan to impress Foster.
His doctors have said his depression and psychosis are in full remission.

Great. Now we can employ another six or seven Secret Service Agents to tail him while he's out while we still maintain a bed and staff in the asylum for his return from his visits. Glad his parents get to see him no matter the expense and risk to others. /sarc
I agree, I think he really was delusional when he shot Reagan. The question is, should we let him out so he can do it again?

The way he described it, was alot of liberals becoming delusional and letting political beliefs effect their own personal lives.
He believes that politics, and the political atmosphere of today, allows alot of mentally ill people to use politics as a cover for their own problems.
The example he gave to me, which makes some sense though I do really think liberalism is a mental illness (he doesn't) is that if a guy who claims he is straight went out into public wearing a bra and panties rambling about the plight of cockroaches, we would call him nuts, but if he does the same thing protesting the war in iraq, suddenly, no one blinks an eye and we call him a political activist, the media overlooks the get up and cares about the message, even though the guy is dressed like an ass and just looking for attention.
I was thinking the same thing. shoot a pothead rock star and you're in trouble.
shoot a president and you're a parolee.
Valid or not, a man who assassinated the President should not be allowed out of the ward.
Besides, there should be -some- degree of culpability when one is insane. Otherwise, drunks would never be charged for anything.

The truly mentally ill, deserve a safe place, for they are all ready trapped in a prison of their own mind. They are in a sad situation.
Drunks are a completely different class of people, and should not be allowed to pass as insane. Drunks can change if they want to, it is simply a mater of wanting to.
At this stage and given his compliance with the conditions of shorter term releases, there is nothing inappropriate about these new restrictions.
