Rep. Katherine Harris Lent $250,000 To Her Sagging Senate Bid In FL
The Hill ^ | January 11, 2005 | Peter Savodnik

“If she has any pride, she’ll be out in a month,” said a Republican with close ties to Harris campaign officials. “If she cares about her party, she’ll be out in a month. Otherwise, the Senatorial Committee won’t do a thing and she’ll get beat by 15 points.”

I think it is a shame that Gallagher and Crist are both running for Governor when either of these men would make a great Senate candidate.

Our beef? She'll lose.

I listened to her give a speech, to a 100% group of Republican party loyalists, and it was entirely forgettable.

She won't beat Bill Nelson.

The person who could beat Bill Nelson is Congressman Mark Foley. He would be a winner all the way.

I hope when Harris pulls out, he will step in.

Katherine Harris is a good woman. No one that I know of has been smearing her.

However, many of us in other parts of Florida have felt for a long time she could not beat Bill Nelson.

There is absolutely no enthusiasm for her anywhere that I look.

There is no way you should have counted out Katherine Harris when she "ran" for her House seat. That seat was created for a Republican victory. She would have had to work really hard to lose it.

She can run again and again and again and be fairly assured of retaining her House seat.

You do know about Mark Foley's full biography, right?

Actually, in my opinion, she is a RINO. She is very big into supporter of the ARTS.

I remember when she ran for Secretary of State against Sandra Mortham. Mortham would have won except some scurrilous charges of unethical and illegal behavior were dropped in the final days of the primary. They later turned out to be completely false, but it was too late. The elections were over. Republican voters will not vote for an ethically or morally tarnished (Newt, you listening?) candidate.

I listened to her speech during a primary campaign event and it sure sounded as though I was listening to a campaign list of promises from a liberal Democrat. She was very multi-culti, big into diversity, globalist, and wanted government funding for the arts.

She is a nice lady who was put into a very public position during the 2000 election. She followed Florida law to the letter. The Democrats focused all their fury and ire on her. Anyone in the Secretary of State's chair at that time would have been villified. It just happened to be her. And, even then the only thing Leno, Letterman, and the Democrat-owned media could truly criticize her about was her makeup. She has since toned down the blue eyeshadow and lightened up some on the mascara, so that issue won't be prominent in a campaign.

Have you ever thought why Lefties hate mascara? It seems to really set them off.

However, the grassroots Republicans don't have any enthusiasm for her. She can't win.

Mel Martinez won the Senate because we worked our tails off in a couple of counties in Northeast Florida. We had to convince our voters to accept him on the basis the President had chosen him to run.

Mel Martinez barely squeaked by Betty Castor and he won the state with the 5,000 votes we mustered for him up in our very Republican area of Northeast Florida.

Had it not been for Duval, Clay and St. Johns' Counties, Betty Castor, Democrat, would be one of Florida's two current Senators.

I don't know about Mark Foley's full biography.

It would be helpful to know it.

Really? That's disappointing, needless to say.

"Have you ever thought why Lefties hate mascara? It seems to really set them off."

Lol, I think it reminds them of Tammy Faye Bakker and proper Bible Belt women who "stand by" their men.

I'm not sure how to phrase this to avoid legal implications, but let me say it has been widely reported that he is gay and he refuses to deny it. This will become an issue in any campaign.

I've seen her picture.

Nothing associated with Katherine Harris can be described as 'sagging'.

Yowsa.

Mel hasn't really made much of an impression in the Senate yet. I realize he is only a freshman member, but he is way too low profile.

I disagree with Sen. Schumer on practically everything, but he has the visibility of five average Senators combined. We need someone like Schumer on our team.

"The RNC and WH should bug out, let the voters pick their candidate. Like Rush says, conservatism is winning, and Harris should lock onto that."

One point I haven't addressed, and there have been others who have brought it up... Exactly how Conservative is Harris ? There was always the assumption she was strongly so, but others have been raising questions that she is far more "moderate" than has been let on.

"You have every right to point out minuses for Harris, and did a good job in your post. But there are pluses."

I hate to be negative, but I'm not seeing a lot of those pluses.

"Hammering Harris reminds me of the hammering Keyes took on FR taking on Obama."

Well, I was a Keyes supporter, but the dynamics and situation of that race were completely different than this one.

"Checked your profile, very nicely done."

Thank you, though I've got half of it down. ;-)

"I hope I'm mistaken, but I thought I read that both Crist and Gallagher are pro-choice on abortion. I think they'd have a hard time beating Bill Nelson statewide if they can't get pro-life conservative Democrats from North Florida to vote for them, not to mention if they don't get a huge GOP turnout."

I always presumed they were pro-life, so if they aren't, that would be a disappointment (and a worry).

(Re: Allen Bense)

Yes, perhaps he could consider a race against the pesky Boyd (who clearly is out-of-step for his Conservative GOP district).

Naomi,
Let's just say that if you think Harris is too liberal for you, Foley will make Harris look like Jesse Helms. Foley might have appeal to Democrats and Independents, but he just doesn't have a whole lot of appeal to Republicans and Conservatives (outside of the Light-in-the-Loafers and Sugarplum Faerie factions of the GOP). One Lindsey Graham in the Senate is one too many.

However, she's gutsy and willing to fight for what's right.

However if she backs away from this, it's almost an admission she IS a pawn of the party instead of an independent thinker and fighter for what's right.

I hope I'm mistaken, but I thought I read that both Crist and Gallagher are pro-choice on abortion.

Crist is pro-life in a "I'm a hard core social conservative but not like a Bible thumper or anything right wing or scary or dogmatic" kind of way, Gallagher is kind of pro-abortion but in a "vote for me because I'm a pro-life pro-family social conservative" kind of way.

They have been playing a strange game of leapfrog, each trying to run to the right AND left of the other -- from what I can tell.

AFAIK they're both 'officially' pro-life but realistically somewhere in the wide spectrum between Jeb and Toni, with Crist a bit further right.

Well, I don't want this to become one of those MD4Bush threads, but I heard from a high-ranking Republican Party official from Palm Beach County that the local party officials have known for years about Foley's same-sex orientation but that it has never been an issue with them. That's as may be, but I think that it could very well be an issue among conservative Democrats in North Florida and among Republicans throughout the state (he has often voted for special rights for gays), and those are the votes we need to defeat Bill Nelson.
