Martin gets Buzzed
Edmonton Sun ^ | 2006-01-19 | Neil Waugh

What a friend Mr. Dithers has in Buzz. Canadian Auto Workers Union president Buzz Hargrove showed up with Paul Martin again yesterday as the federal Liberals' desperation campaign took a swing through the southwestern Ontario battleground ridings.

Buzz has been regular Martin arm candy ever since he showed up at a rally before Christmas in Windsor. The press release that the Liberal's surreal war room put out at the time was something else.

"Buzz Hargrove said he felt like hugging the prime minister for his commitment to the auto industry," the statement gushed.

Hargrove's decision to endorse the Liberals' culture of corruption has caused hard feelings in the labour movement, where Buzz has already been on the outs for raiding other unions' members.

Yesterday, the Service Employees International Union (one of Hargrove's targets) put out a document slamming his jump to the Grits as a failure.

"The stakes are too high to play political games," blasted SEIU rep Sharleen Stewart, who branded Hargrove's cynical Liberal hug "ill-advised."

Of course, the CAW boss's decision to ditch the NDP came with strings attached.

Martin went to Windsor with $46 million of taxpayers' cash in his hand for DaimlerChrysler. The Liberals have already pledged $400 million to other auto-industry outfits - the folks that the NDP used to call "corporate welfare bums."

Force-feeding these foreign-owned Ontario hothouse tomatoes is "crucial to the success of virtually every industry in Canada," Martin roared.

This week he was attacking Conservative Leader Stephen Harper for his "very different vision for our country."

"Stephen Harper would break Canada's word to the world by pulling out of the Kyoto accord," Martin scolded. To which large numbers of Albertans would answer, "Go for it, Stephen."

Kyoto, if the Liberals ever had the guts to implement their plan, would impose massive penalties, costs and restrictions on Alberta's economic engine. Martin's brilliant national vision is to torque foreign-owned car plants with taxpayers' millions in Ontario while punishing hydrocarbon industries in Alberta.

"Only a Liberal government can represent the values of Canadians," he blurted. Even if that means Albertans start losing their houses again.

Martin was supposed to be on the same theme yesterday, until his new buddy Buzz decided to share some of his excellent views about the Conservative leader, Alberta and separatism. He accused Harper of "not having a sense of Canada."

"His sense is about Alberta," Hargrove rambled. "The wealth of Alberta everybody recognizes is much greater than it is anywhere in Canada.

"Those principles that he was brought up with and believes in coming out of there," the offensive Martin backer continued, "don't sit well with the rest of Canada."

But Buzz wasn't finished. He had already issued a statement accusing Harper of being a separatist because he has called for moderate reforms to allow provinces to basically do their own thing under their constitutional powers.

Yesterday, he urged Quebecers to cast strategic votes for the Bloc Quebecois rather than the Conservatives to stop Harper in Quebec.

"In any way they can," Hargrove said.

Later, Liberal arm-twisting forced him to issue a semi-retraction where he conceded that Harper "is a federalist."

Yesterday, the Bank of Montreal released its latest industry-sector update.

"Prospects remain bright for key resource-based industries," whooped BMO chief economist Rick Egelton. "In particular, the boom in the oil and gas sector - especially oilsands developments - will be a major catalyst of activity."

Meanwhile, back in the Buzzland, part of the Martin Nation, "automotive industries will face trying times," Egelton said.

"Announcements on restructuring by traditional North American assemblers - prompted by excess capacity - add their weight to sluggish demand and the high cost of raw materials and fuel."

In other words, Alberta is going to be Canada's economic saviour again in 2006. But all we get is abuse from Martin and his new buddy Buzz.

What a country.

Union thugs and Socialist crooks are one and the same. Makes sense that they'd be pals.

I think if the CPC polls (SES anyway) go back up and then on Monday Harper wins a majority, he should reward Buzz, seeing's how Buzz's Senate seat is now pretty much out of reach.

I'm thinking Ambassador to Mozambique or Rwanda.

Not so.
Actually, the one downside of the Auto Pact has been that at least prior to its inception Canada had the technology to and did build vehicles for its own domestic use from the ground up. Chrysler's (named for its founder - Canadian "Walter") tool room in Windsor Ontario was then the largest such operation in the British Commonwealth.
Otherwise, the Auto Pact has overall been highly beneficial for both nations and accordingly served as the prototype for NAFTA as it was originally envisioned by President Reagan & Prime Minister Mulroney.

And if there were not a United States there would not be a Canada auto industry

Maybe you could elaborate on that statement.
Canadians buy approx 2,000,000 vehicles per year.
We also produce Hondas, Toyotas, Susukis here in Canada.
If we couldn't buy the 1.2M U.S. vehicles per year, why
couldn't and woudn't we build more of the other vehicles
available? How would the production of more Hondas, Toyotas etal
not qualify as "Canadian Auto Industry"?
I've driven mostly G.M. cars all my life, but a car built
in Canada is a car built in Canada regardless of whether it's
an American, German, Korean or Japanese company, n'est pas?
What am I missing?

Two alternate captions:

"With friends like this, who needs any enemies?"

No, more like leader of the Separation Party of Alberta, since that is what he seems to believe in.

Hopefully the CAW rank and file - including both conservatives that don't share their values and NDP voters angry with his backstabbing - will fire Buzz at the next union convention...

Autopact is a scam played on the consumer by corrupt corporate shills and the US government. I should have a right to buy GOOD cars without being penalized by this protectionist measure. Enough charity to auto workers already.

I live in Windsor. I work in the auto industry. This is an NDP town and a CAW town but Buzz is losing friends fast in Windsor and he is hurting his own cause here. Many guys on the shop floor are voting Conservative this election.

We Tories need to hit the unions hard if we get a majority. We need "right to work" laws. We need open shops. We need to ban unions using union funds for politics.
