LAS VEGAS - A 22-year-old aspiring teacher from Oklahoma was crowned Miss America on Saturday night, the first time the storied but struggling pageant was held outside Atlantic City, N.J.
Jennifer Berry, a student at the University of Oklahoma, outlasted 51 other women to become Miss America 2006, earning a $30,000 college scholarship and a yearlong speaking tour in the process.

I haven't watched Miss USA or Miss America in 15 years or so.
Miss North Carolina was lucky to be there; two years ago this month, she had the second of two brain tumor operations.
Her determination to live got her there tonight.
That's pretty brave to me.
Wow, did you lose your job when Miss America moved?
Bitter, bitter.
Bump.
Is there anything more pointless or boring than beauty pageants? I'd rather go to a Circus and that's right up there with root canals.
Me either........even missed it tonight; only reason I clicked was to see if Miss North Carolina won anything because I saw her on TV a year or so ago, near death's door.
I vote for coming on a thread you don't care anything about just to b*t*h and moan.
Hey, wasn't that Bob Hope's signature song? No, wait. It was "thanks for the memories". Nevermind :-)
I believe SLC and Dallas do have the rights on the Babes...
Just one mans observation!
Barbra Mougin of Indiana won back in the mid 70s.
According to a friend of mine who works with her, Julia is a long-distance runner and trains for 2 hours per day to prepare for her marathons. He also told me she's a really sweet girl. BTW, I think she's even more stunning in person. :)
I gotta get to know you , series funnyman
anyhow , good laugh on this end
Pearl Bailey , indeed
I watched the pageant tonite, out of curiosity, because they said they were going back to the old format, rather than what it's been lately, which was over-hyped superficial trashiness. Contrary to what some have said here on this thread, I thought the pageant was fast moving, I enjoyed the format they used, and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought their choices when going from 10 to 5 to 3 were reasonable and fair, and there were some very pretty women contestants. It struck me though, that last year's Miss America looked so much like this year's choice. Take a look at the two of them; they could be sisters.
I might add, the best part of watching the pageant this year was that it was on CMT, which I didn't even know I had on my cable service. After the pageant ended they had a couple of other programs following it that I got hooked on, and enjoyed a lot. So, now I have another channel to tune into when bored with what's on the other ones. I like country music anyway, and it's so much more palatable than a lot of stuff on TV, like the horrid MTV. It will be a pleasant new option for me.
I definitely agree with you on how horrid MTV has gotten. I'm glad that CMT decided to pick the pageant up as it got disastrous ratings last year on ABC (due to the stupid deviations they made from the old format).
Last year's Miss America does look a little like the new one. I saw both of them in real life earlier this week and they are both very tall, thin brunettes. They both are incredibly beautiful, but Deidre Downs (old) has crystal blue eyes and Jennifer Berry (new) has dark brown eyes.
Boy- that REALLY speaks well of the "popularity" of this contest nowadays.
Ha!
My wife has never found anything LESS than 4" heels to be comfortable.
She trips and falls when she wears flats!
Surely some judge will declare that it's discrimination that so many stated have never had a winner and choose one from those states. After all, a judge in MD just ruled that the state marriage laws discriminate.
This will probably be my favorite thread of the year
