NBC Cancels Emmy-Winning 'West Wing' After Seven Seasons, Makes Several Midseason Moves

PASADENA, Calif. Jan 22, 2006 — The new president on "The West Wing" will be a real short-timer: NBC announced Sunday it was pulling the plug on the Emmy-winning political drama after seven seasons in May.

NBC, struggling to regain its footing after the worst season in its history, also outlined several midseason schedule changes including the moves of popular dramas "Law & Order" and "Las Vegas."

"The West Wing" announcement wasn't much of a surprise. Although this season's story line with a presidential campaign involving a Democrat played by Jimmy Smits and Republican portrayed by Alan Alda has been strong critically, ratings have sunk with its move to Sunday nights.

The decision to cancel it was made before actor John Spencer, who played former presidential chief of staff Leo McGarry, died of a heart attack Dec. 16, said Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment president.

"There's a point when you look at the ratings and say, it feels like it's time," Reilly said.

The series finale will be May 14, preceded by a one-hour retrospective. The campaign to replace the fictional Josiah Bartlet as president will be settled, NBC said.

Producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme, who created the show and guided it through its early years, will not be involved in the finale, Reilly said.

"The West Wing" won four Emmy Awards for best television drama in a row for its tales of political intrigue. At its prime, it also offered NBC two valuable benefits: critical acclaim and the most upscale audience on television, an important drawing point for advertisers.

I never watched it knowing it was liberal propaganda. At one time I would have watched for Martin Sheen but when Sheen got preachy and political I could not abide him anymore. Same with the rest of the Hollywood libs. I would never pay to see them. Susan Sarandon, Glyneth Paltrow, George Clooney, Danny Glover, Jamie Foxx, Robert Redford, and Steven Speilberg. And since Buttcrack Mountain came out, I have been able to keep food down.

Martin Sheen got preachy and political in, oh, 1969 - so I'm not sure when you stopped watching him ; )

Seriously, I do not pay to see any of those actors either - if I have to go to the theatre with any libs, I buy a tickets for something else like The Passion or Chronicles of Narnia and then go see the other movie - since it's on T.V. though, I don't have a problem adding it to TiVo. Maybe if we were a Neilson ratings household, I would hold your opinion.

Correction:

Since Buttcrack Moutain came out, I haven't been able to keep food down. Now I'm waiting for the new CNN line up. Cnn is bringing in Glen beck and J.C. Watts. I hope those two hold up and not get rolled over like Scarborough on MSNBC. I just can't watch him or Tucker Carlson. MSNBC defangs their conservatives making them boring. Only Michael Savage and Allen Keyes were good on MSNBC and they got rid of Keyes for Donahue who tanked big time.

Martin Sheen has been bleeding heart liberal along time but it is me who has changed politically. Things that didn't bother me before outrage me now. The inconsistencies of the liberals grates me now and believe me, I'm the last person in the world who would have ever considered voting Republican. However, when it comes to seeking common sense in the two major political parties, the dems come up short.

Anyone have a picture of Martin Sheen walking down a sidewalk with duct tape over his mouth they can paste on here?

One if funniest things I've seen from Hollyweird in a long time.

I am not faulting you for being outraged my that at all - each battle in our fight against liberalism needs its own general ; )

I loved Lenny and miss Jerry Orbach terribly.

Me too. I'll take Lenny and Benjamin Bratt or Lenny and Chris Noth any day. There was still some irreverence in the show then.

I also have never watched Oprah, Jerry Springer or The View

It has been proven that watching these shows actually lowers one's intelligence!

"Another blow to Al-Queda. Another victory in the War on Terror."

If only the blight of other liberal cultural initiatives could be removed as easily as cancelling a television program.

Sheen will have to find some other way to tilt at windmills with his misdirected self-righteousness.

they took one of their best shows (ER) and tried to make it political this year.

ER went political a long time ago, when half of the female characters came out as lesbians. I used to watch religiously but haven't seen it in two years now. Is it still on?

About time. Never once watched it.

****************

I watched part of a show the first year, and remembered why I hate Martin Sheen. I changed the channel and that was it.

Martin Sheen will have more time for the "peace" protests!

Can he be helped?
