Store Ordered To Repaint Window Frame

NASHVILLE, Ind. -- Officials in the rustic southern Indiana tourist town of Nashville are ordering a store owner to repaint a bright blue window frame.

Nashville's nine-member Development Review Commission has told the owners of J Bob's that they have until Aug. 1 to repaint the window frame to a more appropriate color.

The owner's daughter said her 79-year-old father repainted the window before leaving for a winter vacation in Florida. She said her mother got a call complaining about the color and thought the whole thing was silly.

The president of the Development Review Commission said they are coming up with a palate of acceptable colors for the town.

J Bob's sells merchandise including hot sauce and troll dolls to tourists who arrive each fall to look at the changing leaves.

You wouldn't dare come out in public and say that. These people are not commies ~ they are honest business people whose livelihoods depend to a considerable degree on the trade dress for which Nashville has become known over many deaces of hard work.

....I can assure you when this owner purchased the property he was well aware of the covenant requiring him to maintain the historical look ......

Perhaps not. The man was said to be 79 years old and may have been willed the property. He may have actually been granfathered but all the others forgot. That also happens.

He chose the most garish combination of "approved' colors and they couldn't say a thing !...........

Now there's a creative (and feisty) solution!

Reminds me of the guy who did that because his word was no good on a signed covenant.

His community sued him and he was financially ruined.

Trick is, if you don't want to go along with the rules you've agreed to yourself, best thing to do is move somewhere else.

Their livelihood depended on the place looking the way it looked ~ not like an IHOP! Today Nashville is in the throes of a revival of it's "art colony" traditions. One individual must not be allowed to destroy this.

I guess I can sympathize with the town - one of my neighbors painted their house a God-awful shade of titty-pink. I swear the house glows in the dark!

If you want to exercise your right to do as you damn well please, then you shouldn't live in a town that makes its living off of a style or a theme or a look.

Themed towns and style enforcement make for great communities to be in... better than the glaring ugly unmatched sprawl in poorly planned towns.

Leavenworth, WA

It's a Bavarian town. Everything has Bavarian architecture, even the Safeway. It's NOT the place for independent grouches who don't appreciate the mission of the town.

Some of the trashiest looking shops are the oldest and most authentic. Every kitsch experience is not going to be encountered in fresh cut timber painted with bright acrylics.

BTW, the California equivalent, Julian, almost burned down last year. They did suffer damage. Last time I was there we were paying $15 for a sandwich and $45 for a pie.

Nashville costs less.

I was there before Thanksgiving. Haven't been there for almost 10 years. It was a nice drive over from Bloomington. I forgot how small Nashville is compared to some of the mountain towns in Colorado like Breckenridge.

I made a vow back in 1995/1996 when I moved to Colorado is that if I moved back to Indiana, I would go down and live in Bloomington or Brown County area.

I have been to Nashville and was not impressed. Some of those shops are just trashy.

My word! Look at that thing... what did they do - take over the jail and turn it into a "theater"?

Where does the overflow go for entertainment when all ten seats are full?

They're just trying to help these people to make RIGHT DECISIONS.

What's wrong with government forcing, erm, uhm, helping people make RIGHT DECISIONS?

Plenty of Republican city councils do this too. It's like the "personal freedom" switch is turned to "off" whenever you're in a city planning meeting.

My experience in my local homeowners' association has taught me that the only people who want to serve on the board are those who have an agenda and want to use their board power to implement it.

The three we had to put up with (until we voted them out) were all Democrats, as it happens, but your point is correct.

Cary, NC -- where Red Roof Inn can't have a red roof!

I remember about 10 years ago, when I lived in the area, there was much ado over an award winning Parade of Homes house in Cary that had a bright red metal roof. I don't know if they were forced to change it.

Why did the town accept a "Development Review Commission"? Were they paying attention? What is it they say... eventually you get the government that you deserve.

Our town fought off a historic district that would have given a board of directors this exact same power - you paint the buildings the colors they approve, and they tell you when to paint etc. etc. etc.

Undeterrred, the historic commission came back with the same guidelines a couple of months later, but they put a prettier face on them, promising it wouldn't be intrusive. It hasn't been passed yet, but they've let the dust settle and will approve these things when nobody's looking.
