HARRISBURG, PA (February 7, 2007) – GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Scranton today announces his withdrawal from the field in the race for Pennsylvania governor. In a statement released to the press, Scranton expresses his hope and confidence in the message of reform that embodied his candidacy from start to finish. However, he stated that he is, “Less convinced in our ability to win the precinct-by-precinct battles. We are strong but not strong enough to defeat a candidate that has received near unanimous backing of the state and national parties.”

In politics, a promise to stay in the race til the end is usually followed by a withdrawal announcement 48 hours later.

It's like a politician's own personal vote of confidence.

Rush said today that during the Steelers superbowl celebration downtown, when Swann got up to speak the crowd was chanting "Governor, Governor"

In PA politics, I have to wonder if he's taking one for the team or if he's just preempting the release of a skeleton in his closet....

Either way, I hope Swann tramples Fast Eddy.

Swann is going to profit in the Pittsburgh area from the NFL Championship and the nostalgia that has come with it.

Sounds to me like he's realized that Swann's the windshield and he's the bug. I'm sure he'll get something for stepping aside, at any rate.

How much do you want to bet that Rendell's on the phone to Chuck Schumer right now, asking if he can borrow a couple of staffers to do a little "opposition research?"
