Perhaps if Muslims opened charities (similar to the Salvation Army) that provided food and shelter to the homeless this would not be an issue.

Are the Jews of France complaining or rioting? I doubt it. I would guess that, if French Jews thought this was a problem, they would mobilize and finance their own relief efforts.
A point to be made as well is that, if a Jew is truly starving, the Law would allow him to eat pork or lobster or whatever was available because the preservation of life is a higher good than a dietary law, a point muslims might want to take to heart.
