LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Monday, February 20, 2006

Does the United States need a military?

Editor -- As a born and raised San Franciscan, an anti-war protester since the '60s, a former vice chair of the state Democratic party and a person who goes on national TV on a regular basis in defense of our anti-war stances, I have to say that when I heard Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval say on the Fox News show "Hannity & Colmes" that the United States should not have a military, I thought that I didn't hear him correctly. After the fourth time he said it, I was stunned.

San Francisco is the city of peace and is the city of independent thinking, but I do not know one San Franciscan, other than Gerardo, who thinks that the United States of America should not have a military, not one. Even the anti-war Vatican has a military!

What was Gerardo thinking? To be clear, as a San Franciscan, I absolutely believe that the United States of America needs a military.

I can't even imagine what Bill O'Reilly will do with this!

ANGELA ALIOTO

San Francisco Let's think this through

Editor -- What, the United States without a military? Shocking, absolutely shocking. Of course if a child continually uses a toy to hurt other kids, it's a good idea to take the toy away from the child. If a driver can't seem to drive without running down pedestrians, we probably want to take away his driver's license. If a doctor purposely misleads patients and causes harm to them, by all means, take away the license to practice medicine.

But take away our military? Oh no, not that.

Can't we connect Berkeley and SF and make them a foreign country?

Wait a minute. "Angela Alioto" rings a bell. She's actually been on with O'Reilly several times spewing the usual SF nonsense, and most recently I heard her defending SF's latest resolution in favor of impeaching Bush.

But what if the child refuses to give you the toy or the driver continues to drive without a license?

Have them move to a country with no military - I'm sure they'll just love the quality of life there.

Hardly an apt comparison, ya think? A kids toy, a drivers license compared to the military protection against nukes for a country of ~300 million. They truly are off in la la land up there in SF.

Sounds like a great idea. Should be able to round up a few unemployed Taliban to replace the current city council. Might be fun.

Which means that your have helped the enemy kill thousands of American Military and multi thousands of civilians. Thanks for your support and I will make sure that when the earthquake hits that I not send one dime to help and I would hope that no one else does either.

Perhaps a dose of Sharia law would give them a clue as to why we need a military.

Then they could have their own army. I bet it would look a lot like the Belgian army

Bears repeating. It's like just another piss-ant little country that's hostile to the U.S. It is my goal to go to my grave without having ever set foot in California or Cuba, and when Castro dies, I may go to Cuba.

Just remember to take every opportunity to remind normal Americans (who might be confused about politics) that the next rat speaker of the house (God forbid) represents this fine burg and that the politics seen on display here are typical of the bicoastal rat elties.
